HisChildForever
I thought that men would love independent, strong women, but (in general) they don't appear to. Men are programmed to like their women soft and feminine.
Not so sure about this statement because women can be "soft and feminine" and "independent and strong" at the same time. Can I not live on my own and pursue a career while dressing and acting feminine? Or am I expected to dress like a boy? I am not understanding this. I have a very independent personality but that certainly does not stop me from looking the way I look and acting the way I act.

That is why the author says she has a clinging regret of being the mom holding the baby while making dinner. This is the soft and feminine I believe she is speaking of. Could be wrong, but thats how I read the article.

Why are "soft and feminine" and "strong and independent" mutually exclusive?

Most men want to be the knight in shining armor for their lady of choice. Strong and independent can make that difficult.

I think Sarah Palin is the perfect example for a woman who is feminine and independent.

A woman can be living on her own and pursuing her dream job and still graciously accept her date paying for the dinner.
