Yep, He's Dying

So as you all have probably noticed I’m pretty hard core, like a green beret only even more so.

That’s probably because I’m actually a (defunct) blacbelt. In my system of Goju ru before testing for your blackbelt you have to go through like a month or so long really intense preparation period run by this one really high ranking black belt. Anyway I was eight when I did it, so it was especially memorable for me and it makes up a lot of my early memories. The guy who does the preparation is someone I’ve known since I was five, plus the preparation thingy a bobber. So needless to say I’ve known him for most of my life. Anyway, I mentioned when I came back from my suspension that a “father figure” of sorts of mine was dying of brain cancer. That guy was the guy I was just talking about and I just got an e-mail from people back there that the fellow fell into a coma a few days ago and his breathing is getting even more shallow. I guess I thought I’d have more time, like to see him again (it’s been like a year) but I guess not. When I last saw him he was in great shape, joking etc. So I don’t know. I guess any prayers would be nice although I honestly don’t know what good I would do. Anyway I guess I don’t quite know how to approach this. Anyway, his last name was Grey, he was(is) married with a young son and a son from a previous marriage. He worked with disabled children I believe as some sort of therapist/teacher. Before “settling down” I think he competed in karate tournaments on the national/international level (a lot of blackbelts there were on the world circuit). I also think he studied in Japan and the Philippines. I guess since I’m not really around anyone who knew him at the moment I just felt like sharing if that’s alright.

Of course that's alright. You can always pray for him and his family; I'll keep them in my prayers. It is tough when we can remember the person so alive...and yet now....

yeah, over the summer I went to the dojo and he was still in amazing shape. My hair had grown out because I'd been to busy to find a barber and he joked that I was growing it out to give to him, then he left in great spirits saying he had to get home to take a "Nuclear cocktail".

So I was a bit shocked that he fell so far so fast. I mean this guy was in amazing physical shape. I appreciate the prayers, I'm going to try that as well.

It is shocking how these things happen.
My favourite volunteers at the hospital died just a few months ago. And during the summer, she was in great shape...well, I consider doing all the things that she did at the age of 90 great shape anyway. One day she fell and had to go to the hospital, and before we knew it, she had complications and died. It happens so fast, and it's so hard to believe, especially when it's someone you're close to.

that's always tragic. My great grandfather was 99 and he died a few years ago. But he was with his son (people in my family live a long time :detective: ) in a home, knew it was coming, was tired, ready to go (but not bitter, just ready, at peace if that makes sense) etc. I always hated the idea of the old dying in some cold hospital away from their home. I guess that's what I find the most sad about your friend. I'm sorry to hear it :ohno:

It's good to share things like this. I will keep your friend in my prayers, he sounds like an amazing man who gave of himself. -Katie

rose wrought of iron

yeah, it's really hard to see someone and then...
My grandmother who has had alzheimers for a while, has started getting a lot worse lately and it's just so hard to watch someone you care about get to that point. I'll be praying for him. And for you.

For your friend:
May Christ Who was crucified for your sake
free you from excruciating pain.
May Christ Who died for you
free you from the death that never ends.
May Christ the Son of the living God,
set you in the ever green loveliness of His Paradise,
and may He, the true Shepherd
recognize you as one of His own.
May you see your Redeemer face to face
and standing in His presence forever,
may you see with joyful eyes
Truth revealed in all its fullness.

Amen.

I love gojo ryu. Real karate takes dedication and patience. If he was a real karateka, like it definitely sounds like he was, then it's almost a given that he's lead a rewarding life.
I shall pray that he's made his peace with God.
