This was me too! Also because Oprah recommended it.

I haven't seen it yet.

 • 1 year later...

I just saw Slumdog this weekend for the first time. I know a little behind!!!

I loved it. It was beautiful. Just the right sort of genuine love story amidst severe hardships.
I just about melted in the last scene. I dont care laugh it up. I might sound crazy but I think of Jesus and the Church when I see something like that.

Didn't care for the movie when I saw it, but thought it's worth pointing out that Indian culture is not Persian culture.

Semper Catholic

This and Crash are probably the most overrated Best Pictures of all time. Don't get me wrong it was definitely entertaining, and seriously beautiful to look at, but the story was so cliched and thinner then a piece of paper.

There is certainly a place in the world for feel good movies, but I don't know if they're worthy of significant awards. Slumdog is like a big bowl of ice cream. Tastes great but at the end you have a tummy ache and realize you ate a pint of something with no nutritional value.

I agree Crash was a travesty.

The plot of Slumdog was contrived, weak, cliched, etc. The cinematogrophy was candy. Yet for me love is everything. The love of the two main characters was not empty romance. They grow up together with tragedy, suffering, lack of necessities for life, evils. Jamal shows genuine selfless spiritual love toward Lakita, and basically saves her. That is where I thought the movie had power.

You're cool. 1+. I thought similarly. I agree that The Light can be seen in the most unexpected places.

Spoilers below:

I loved when Salim exclaimed "God is great!" after being shot in a tub of money. He realized something--- he had all the money he wanted but yet could not live to have it. All he lived for was himself. " What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?" And the selfless little brother whom he always mistreated actually ended up with money he could keep-- he also got the girl too.

God is good because he reverses fortunes-- He watches over the unfortunates and repays men according to their deeds. God cares. Salim rejoices for Jamal and he also rejoices that he had a last opportunity to look out for his brother.
