When I was younger I had thought's about committing suicide. At some retreats I was told comtemplating suicide was a sin, but when I had gone to confession the priest I had gone to said that contemplating suicide was a temptaion and that I had done nothing wrong.

I'm just confused now but I just would like an answer.

Ok, I don't think contemplating suicide is in itself a sin, but I do think it is a sign of a deeper problem and should be mentioned to the priest in the Confessional.

Suicide itself is a sin. It is not only murder, but despair. However, since we also know that people who commit suicide are not always entirely stable, and that it can arise out of a mental or emotional imbalance, the person who commits suicide is not necessarily culpable (fully responsible) for their sin, because they aren't choosing it with their complete free will.
