Electronics retailer has struggled as the U.S. economy has weakened
Circuit City became the largest retailer to fall victim to the expanding financial crisis Friday, announcing it will shut down its remaining 567 U.S. stores at the cost of 34,000 more jobs after failing to sell the business.

The closure of the nation’s second-biggest consumer electronics retailer spells more trouble for the nations malls, and is the latest casualty of an unprecedented pullback in consumer spending that has claimed KB Toys, Mervyns LLC and Linens ’N Things.

“Very, very sad,” said Alan L. Wurtzel, son of company founder Samuel S. Wurtzel and himself a former chief executive of Circuit City. “I feel particularly badly for the people who are employed or until recently were employed.”
A sad day for us consumers and to the employees that work there. :( Click the link to read the rest of the story.

Friendly reminder: They are using liquidators, which means they jack the price higher than it normally is and discount "75%" from that. No bargain or deal, more trickery into thinking your spending less when you are spending more.

Really not surprised by this news. Circuit Town was struggling before this economic downfall happened. :cyborg:

Ironically, I just received coupons in the mail from Discover Card for $X off a purchase of $Y or more at Circuit City.

It reminds me of Clemenza's line in "The Godfather" (no, not the one about the cannoli) where he mentioned that you have to go through the wars every 10 years or so to clear out the bad blood.

Anyone remember Silo or Highland?

I bought my first VCR at Silo. I bought my first camera at Service Merchandise.

Funny, Circuit City bought out "Radio Shack" up here... they're not gone for good. We'll still those stores around. Sorta reminds me about what happened to K-Mart up here... they disappeared in Canada, but still remained south of the border.

Yeah, you still see both stores but they're owned by the same corporation (or whatever).

Woolworths is going too. We used to sit at the counter there to have greasy burgers on Saturday afternoons. You just knew that griddle hadn't been cleaned since the War, but it didn't matter. That's one of the things about getting older. You are homesick for places that don't exist anymore.

:bump: Yes, for a better opportunity for him, and the other 35,000 people who are losing their jobs.
