Actually, it depends on what part of the South to which one is referring (to be hypercorrect) and the social status of those who are expressing the second person pronoun.

In some areas, 'y'all' is both the singular and plural second person pronoun, as well as being both the nominative and the objective case; however, in certain restricted usages, 'y'all' is the second person singular (nominative and objective) but the plural (nominative and objective) is 'all y'all'.

I do that all the time. On purpose. I hate he/she, so I will use one if it is clear - "Everyone please pass in her paper," works when all my students are female ;). But otherwise, if it is a mixed/generic group? Totally use they as a singular.



[And you've left out the unique-to-Pittsburgh 'yins']
