mommas_boy
I think LD linked a project to put Linux on a gamecube. Absolutely useless, yes, but they proved they could do it.
That'd be pretty awesome, actually. Really, what it's all about is computing power vs. space to fit it in. The Gamecube does a really good job of fitting everything into one relatively small package. And, it already has an on-board cooling system and a power supply. So long as it has a network interface card, I say go for it. I just grabbed an old TiVo, now, too. It doesn't have an ethernet card, which is a problem, but it does have two USB ports on the back. So long as they are USB 2.0, I should be able to get a USB-to-ethernet converter, and run networking over that. (USB 2.0 is faster than ethernet anyway: 480 mbit/s vs. 100 mbit/s) I also need to make sure that I'll be able to boot off of a USB flash drive at some point in order to install Linux. That might require some hardware modifications. Another option, assuming that the TiVo OS (ironically, an in-house linux 2.4 kernel) lives on the hard drive and is not embedded in another part of the system, I might be able to pull out the hard drive, temporarily install it into my desktop, put Ubuntu on it while its in my desktop, and then put it back in the TiVo case. Then, I just hit the power button, and the TiVo boots up Ubuntu thinking it's the default OS! Gotta get a new ATA ribbon for it, though; for some reason, the HD is no longer connected to the mother board. Worst-case scenario, I scavenge the 80 GB HD in the TiVo and put it somewhere else. Can't complain for free, repurposed hardware.
