We'll have to get the work done first though.. .that's the thing. Just give us a bit of time.
I have two old computers back at my parents' house just begging to be turned into servers and added to my network. SMM: could you please do some research for me, and find out the technical requirements to run OpenSimulator Server on a linux box? Just things like RAM, processor speed, hard drive space, band width, etc. for now. Just to find out if those boxes can physically do it. My guess is that most of the rendering is handled by the client. The server just has to transmit textures, shapes, and item locations to each guest. mommas_boy
SMM: If you're serious about this, I'll provide the server, if that means I don't have to buy a brand new computer to handle it. But, I would need to leave most of the in-world building up to you and/or others. All of the out-of-world configuration, plus any in-world programming that needs done, I'll take care of. But in-world building should be point-click and drag-drop.

jeffpugh
Sweet. Any of the LDs want in on this project? could use some planners for layout/designers. Or at least people to make comments, but otherwise have no significant input
mommas_boy
Going to visit my parents this weekend, so with any luck, I'll be able to pick up those computers. Though, my dad may object to me stealing old computers that no one is using anymore ...
jeffpugh
Why would he object to that? Anywho, now I should start recruiting a design team... Calling all cool geeks such as LD, L_D, Winchester... etc?

Hmm... maybe either/or) can peacefully co-exist on this PM server. All this, of course so we can have fun times and so we can evangelise, hopefully. mommas_boy
Ok. Dad's approved me taking his old laptop and my old desktop. I also remembered that I have an old Xbox that I can install Linux on. I think I'm going to try and create a Linux Beowulf cluster for them, since they all have relatively low specs alone, but together, they are strong like the Fellowship of the Ring! Here's what I've got for the Beowulf Cluster: Old Desktop Network Name: "gimli" 500 MHz Pentium III 256 MB RAM Old Laptop Network Name: "aragorn" 1.7/1.2 GHz Pentium VI (I think with hyperthreading) 512 MB RAM 40 GB HD External harddrive (60 GB?) Xbox (original) Network Name: "legolas" 733 MHz Celeron (Some argue it's a Pentium III) 8 or 10 GB HD 64 MB RAM (I can't believe it's this low!) Legolas (the xbox) also has an nVidia GeForce 3MX on it as a graphics card. This card has a 177 MHz processor, and some on-board RAM (but I can't find how much). I'll see if there's some way that I can make use of these in order to speed up this machine. mommas_boy
Ok. New node to add to the cluster: Old Laptop 2 Network Name: "eowyn" (it used to belong to my mom) Pentium M 1.5 GHz/600 MHz (HT) with a 2Meg cache 512 MB RAM 100 GB HD The idea behind the cluster is build a supercomputer out of a bunch of old, smaller computers combined together. Google uses the same method, rather than production class servers. Picked up a network switch the other day, and some cabling. I have room for one more node on the switch, if anyone would like to contribute more computing power to the cluster. I'm particularly excited about converting the xbox over to linux. So, if you have an old xbox that you don't use anymore, I'd be more than happy to take it off of your hands. Laptops are especially good too, because they take so little room.
You know, I always wondered if you could do that with computers, but I never had the know-how to do so.
Linux actually does this pretty automatically, already. It divides a task into "jobs", and issues those jobs to any processors connected to that machine. Basically, on a Beowulf, you're just transmitting those jobs to processors connected to other machines. Connectivity is provided by the network. Theoretically, you could build a Beowulf utilizing every computer connected over the internet. In fact, this is one of the many "practical" tasks done by various viruses. Granted, their intended purpose is usually malicious, such as using the combined computing power to crack financial institutions' encryption. On the other hand, similar voluntary projects have also been created, with more benevolent aims: such as synthesizing proteins for medicines.
And plus, I wanted to do that to run a game, but I guess it doesn't work that way, huh.
So ... I just found a REALLY old computer in a closet: it has just under 14 MB of RAM, and a 119 MHz processor. But, it DOES have a turbo switch! I won't use this one. It would slow down the rest of the cluster.
ETA: I'll be impressed to see you add the Xbox into the mix here. I think I'm more excited about converting that to Linux than I am about actually building the cluster! If I figure out what I'm doing with that, I'd be happy to convert old Xboxes to TV computers for people. The game ports on the front of the system are actually USB ports, so you can plug in a keyboard or mouse. Nihil Obstat
My Stats teacher once made a 'supercomputer' out of networking a bunch of regular computers. Let him do some crazy large statistical calculations. Not sure exactly why he cared... He's a bit of an oddball.
