Meh. It happens. It lagged for me at one point. It wasn't Google's best work. Guess that's why they retired the "experiment". Wasn't as hard core as second life, et al.

Both of these look like they require our own hosting. Active worlds does offer a hosting "product" though, which means we have to pay for it. Of these two, though, I would prefer OpenSimulator, as I would probably be more likely to be able to connect to it than ActiveWorlds on my Linux box.

OpenSimulator would indeed work for a Linuxbox. I can see the problem with the server thing... but, I could talk to some techie friends about that... I know for sure ActiveWorlds is exclusively windows. I believe it was the wiki page that said so. :/ Active worlds seems more customisable anyway. I like custom :D

OpenSimulator may prove more useful for evangelizing. The "realms" in OpenSimulator may be linked into massive grids, the largest of which is OSGrid. You still provide your own hosting, and are therefore able to customize your own realm, but it is linked with other realms in the grid. Therefore, people may wander into and out-of your realm at their leisure, providing better opportunities to evangelize as compared to a private realm.

Myself, though, I've had problems with their viewer. I run an AMD processor, which doesn't like their 32-bit binary.

EDIT: I might be able to compile a binary from source, though.

Actually, it looks like ActiveWorlds provides something similar to this, too.

Yeah, I was looking. I made a mistake in my last comment. I meant the open source one looks more customisable. And yeah, we should stick to the more accessible (but customisable) regions for the sake of evangelisation! :D I just want a world where I can build a couple of nice chapels

I'll try it if
a) it doesn't make me download anything
b) it doesn't slow down my computer to any noticeable degree
[s]c) it's not full of computer pr0nz.[/s]

I decided that c) was kind of redundant. :))

Don't you have an almighty mac? It should have no problem running this since it is such a superior computer. For serious, you'll have to download a client. It's not embedded into browser(s) yet. For now, me, Momma's Boy and other techie types will have to set up a world and stuff. We'll have to make a colab thread or something :ninja:

PS, I was talking to L D about this earlier too. I'd welcome any others who are interested in doing some "hard stuff" so other users don't have to :)

Have to download a client? :( What a buzzkill.
Well if you go to all that work I'll give it a shot.
