littleflower3 Posted October 10, 2012 Share Posted October 10, 2012 For me in the Philippines I had to get used to eating fish and rice all the time. Here in the U.S. when I eat fish I am used to all the bones being taken out. Then there was a whole fish looking back at me and the meal was in silence and I had no idea how to eat it. Visitation academy.... the nuns literally were being run into by students when they didn't expect the sisters to be there... (the Nuns main building renovated, so the Nuns were using a different walkway from what the students expected....).... hence the NUN CROSSING sign. True story!!!! We had beef and vegetable soup, salad, and some delicious rolls. We ended up getting frozen yogurt for dessert because one of the sisters loves frozen yogurt. When I've eaten with them before, we've had a ton of fish cooked in garlic. We live near a huge fishing community, so the fish is super fresh. Sr I smothers shrimp in garlic and butter and Sr P will buy special rolls from this 100 year old bakery. It's so good. That said, I've never had bad food in any of the convents I've visited. maximillion Posted October 14, 2012 Share Posted October 14, 2012 Yup, know that whole-fish-on-a-plate thing from my French convent, the Sisters were all SO adept at eating it and leaving the pointy, bony, yukky bits to one side on the platter. What took more getting used to were Feast Days (we only had fish on Feasts) when this was followed by a treat. Dessert. Served onto the same platter. What was that line about the Observance providing us with ample opportunity for penance?
