Since it's AP and I don't want to be the example made of on their decision to charge people for using their content online...a summary. Bull riding at church, baptism in horse troughs, 140 Cowboy Churches have been founded in the past eight years.

Brought to you by Texas.

This brings up my problem more often than not with non-denom churches and outreaches like this: The more you try to relate to the modern world, the more wonder at God you lose. The fight to be relevant often comes at the cost of the soul of your message.

There were a lot of cowboy bars that went out of business after the Urban Cowboy craze went bye-bye. That's the problem with basing your faith on fads. Now that there's no longer a cowboy in the white house, will these churches lose following?

they are popular here in my state. the reason why i think is because these cowboys and their families (usually 'plain folk'), don't dress up much (and feel uncomfortable when they do), and feel uncomfortable in 'regular' churches where others might be judgmental about their 'plain'-ness.

There was a drive-in church in Florida that appealed to that same group of people. I hate the idea that people feel like they can't come into a church in plain clothes. Jesus didn't wear Chanel.

i actually feel bad when i go to church sometimes. i really like to look my best, i do. but i have one pair of maternity pants that are kinda dressy, and no dress shoes (that aren't heels). so i usually wear my maternity jeans, a nice shirt, and sneakers (that leak because i can't afford to get new ones).

I purposely have no nice clothes. I severely limit my wardrobe. I had issues in the past with spending way too much money on designer clothes, and hand made shoes. It's part penance, and part humility. For example, I will not make a new pair of pants until I completely wear out another pair. The only new clothing I buy are underthings and shoes. Even extreme penance wouldn't force me to buy underwear at the thrift store. I either make it, or buy it second hand. People who know me, understand why I dress this way. People who don't know me think I'm just really poor. I was sitting in the student's lounge one afternoon, and a lady came and gave me the poor collection from chapel. That was awkward.

I never realized how popular Cowboy Churches are, although I had heard of Drive In churches before. The most 'dressed down' I've ever gone to Mass involved sweatpants, the most 'dressed down' I've gone to a Contemporary Service in a Prot church was shorts and t-shirt.
