Detroit School Lacks Toilet Paper, Light Bulbs
Donations Accepted Beginning Jan. 12

DETROIT -- A Detroit elementary school is asking for donations of toilet paper and light bulbs to keep their school functioning.

The principal of the Academy of Americas sent a letter to staff, parents and partners asking for donations of items "that are of the utmost importance for proper school functioning and most importantly for student health and safety."

In the letter, Principal Naomi Khalil cited budget constraints within the district as the reason why the school could no longer stock the items.

The district is grappling with a more than $400 million budget deficit and is on the verge of being assigned an emergency financial manager by the state.

The letter asks for toilet paper, paper towel rolls, trash bags and 60, 100 or 150-watt light bulbs.

"We realize that the economic situation is stressful for our entire community, but we are asking for your collaboration," wrote Khalil. "We thank you for your cooperation and we hope that as a school community we can pull together to guarantee the best possible educational environment for our children."

Parents said a letter went out asking for supplies at the start of the school year.

"They sent out a letter for pencils, pens, they put Kleenex on there," said parent Danny Huddleston.

A spokeswoman for the district said the school is not running out of supplies but instead is asking for them to ensure they have sufficient supplies to what they already have.

But at least one parent said he doesn't mind helping out the school no matter the circumstance.

"I'm all about helping the school. If that's what they need then that's what we need to see what we can do to help the out," said Juan Oroczo.

Donations are being accepted at the school's font office, beginning Jan. 12.

The school is located at 5680 Konkel St. in Detroit

Please explain how the Michigan government let ANY schoool district get this far in debt???

This is just the beginning. I remember having to bring so many kleenex boxes to school at the beginning of the year.

Not surprising, mom is expected to provide a lot out of her own pocket as a teacher. She'll sometimes spend hundreds a year on stuff for the classroom that is required but not provided.

I live less than an hour from the Detroit area. Our governor has placed this state in severe financial trouble, at one point getting so angry with her citizens she threatened to shut down all state government offices, services, and welfare programs unless we agreed to an immediate tax hike. Barack Obama called her in as a financial adviser for the US. Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?

Your free to say it, however it is an archaic and socially self destructive mindset IMHO

This is a topic I can't even begin to discuss without becoming immensely angry. School districts in Michigan are far from equal. And please don't even get me started about how our state lottery is for schools.

Example of our educational system in Michigan: I took Danielle to our preschool round up. Our local school district had only 16 slots available in their preschool program for only at risk students, of which Danielle isn't, and did not offer any sort of pay program. They didn't tell us this in advance. Call me crazy, but is it so much to ask for my child to be able to attend a preschool program in their own community, whether its pay or not.

Argh.

is the definition of "at-risk" illigitimate with a single parent/guardian or guardian living with multiple partners and/or crime history? why does our government love to reward this behavior???

a lady i worked with quit after having her 5th child out of wedlock with her 5th partner, because she was receiving welfare checks for each child and these welfare checks were far more than any amount she could earn working...

and where does the state lottery money go? i thought that was to fund public schooling....

Do expand? What ever do you mean?

What would be your case to say otherwise? Start a thread on the debate table? If education is a right why are colleges not free?
