VoTeckam
Pretty sure Merton died from a lighting strike, though I think he was in his hotel room at the time.
I only have the word of a profesor to go by but I believe the fan story is correct. I would like to second the call for his canonization. He was not only ahead of his time but he is even ahead of ours in some respects. Of course that is not grounds for canonization, but his writings on peace, silence, and love show the fruits of his his contemplative experience (and I would argue are evidence of his extraordinarily intimate relationship with our Father). Old_Joe
How about Brother Roger? He hid Jews during WWII, sought to reconcile christian churches, and possibly died a martyr.

It's entirely possible that with more time the perception of him could turn more positive. As far as I know, the Thomas Merton Center here in Louisville has never said anything about opening a cause for him, which I find a bit interesting since you'd think the people most passionate about him would like to see that happen. Of course, most of the members are probably not Catholic, so maybe that's got more to do with it. Of course, Mother Theresa has her share of controversial quotes. I think she's said something to the effect that her order's mission was to help "Buddhist become better Buddhists, Hindus become better Hindus." I think that largely had to do with their vocation being focused on mercy ministry rather than direct evangelization to convert people to Christ. I'm not sure what to make of something like Merton's "Zen and Christianity are the future" comment, but I'm sure that regardless of what he meant, anyone who says things like that is going to be misunderstood. cheryl
These are all wonderful suggestions! Reading through them I couldn't help but wonder why some haven't already been canonized, such as Blessed Kateri. It's been long enough! LoL. I'd personally like to see more Native American Catholics canonized. Does anyone know if there is a Native American Catholic organization that I could check out? --edit to add-- It would be nice too to see the Catholic Church place more emphasis on the Old Testament Saints than what it does. I think it's important for the development of dogma and also evangelization that we not deviate or ignore the theological ethos of those faithful prior to the first century. Since the Church recognizes that there is truth in even Plato and Aristotle, enough for Church Fathers to incorporate their ideas into their teaching, then how much more should the Church incorporate and be led along by the legitimate traditions of her own Mother! BG45
can i ask why? honestly, many people i speak to about Bl. Margaret never heard of her! but i fell in love with her and her witness when i read a book about her life.
It was a Perpetual Adoration Chapel that bares her name (the only PA Chapel in the state), dedicated to the unborn, where I went and found myself in love with the Eucharist. It was then her whom I asked for intercessory prayer for two cousins in high risk pregnancies whom both delivered healthy children six months apart exactly. Though I often cite Martin Luther's example on why not to do something, his making a deal with a Saint to become a priest if he survived, I more or less made that deal with the Lord and Blessed Marageret on becoming Catholic. To spare the lives of both the mothers and the daughters and I would have what little remaining evidence I needed to convert.

FiereMargriet
I was searching for another thread, found this one...and it seemed too fun not to post something! I second the Martin family! I would also like to see Ven. Pauline Jaricot beatified and canonized and St. Edith Stein declared a Doctor of the Church.
