Saint Therese
Actually the dogs are bred to collect the squirrels tht you have just shot. They don't actually climb the tree and kill the squirrels. FYI
CatherineM
My grandfather hunted for squirrels with hounds. They'd corner them, and he'd smoke them out of the tree.
Saint Therese
I love hounds. I can tell by a hound's bay where he is on the trail, how close he is tothe animal, etc. I love their voices....

Saint Therese
Dad has a bloodhound, but they don't count. They don't have a bay, they have a holler.
Maximilianus
lol, we went from rats to squirrels, which coincidentally are considered rats with bushy tails by some folks. I don't mean hunting dogs, you still need guns to utilize their services, I mean dogs like mini Schnauzers and some terriers that were used to kill rats. BTW anything bigger than a .22 caliber pellet gun is overkill unless you are dealing with ROUSs. Edited December 27, 2008 by Maximilianus

My aunt and uncle used to have a cat and a dog but they still had some mice problems in their basement--until she got a couple of little terriers (I forget what type, but she'd had one before and that was why she got them). It only follows that the dogs must climb the trees to kill the rats. Unless you know of some mystical tree climbing, rat killing, super dogs... CatherineM
My grandfather used a single shot shotgun with bird shot for squirrels. My baby brother still has it, and once threatened my husband that he was going to bring it across the border if he didn't get our marriage blessed by the church. If he hadn't been laughing when he said it, that would be grounds for annulment.
Saint Therese
I don't think rat shot would cause anything more than a scratch.
