homeschoolmom
Anyone read these Catholic periodicals?
popestpiusx
I read both and know people that write for both. They both do a fine job within their sphere. The Wanderer does well when it sticks to a critique of bishops (especially of US Bishops). The Remnant does well when critiquing the overall spiritual climate of the Church. They both have their place and interestingly enough, are edited by members of the Matt family (Wanderer: Al Matt; The Remnant: Mike Matt).
Dave
The Remnant has no business calling itself Catholic. It's attitude can only foster schism. The Wanderer, however, is wonderfully orthodox. Edited March 15, 2004 by Dave
Guest orleans
I used to subscribe to The Wanderer. It was interesting to read, and I did receive an education into what was going on in the Church, but frankly, after a year of this education, I was no more closer to Christ than before. The bad fruit of this education were that I noticed in myself a growing ability to criticise what bishops in dioceses I'd never heard of before were up to, and this diet of judgment and lamenting critique began to wear me out. I also grew tired of and increasingly annoyed with like-minded acqaintances who seemed to feed on this information, who seemed to like to one-up each other about who knew what and whom and which priest or bishop was good, bad, or ugly. It was a disgusting way to be "faithful". Eventually I gave the subscription up, began reading saints' writings, and thinking more about what might be wrong with me, never mind that bishop over there. It's one thing to be aware of wolves and foxes in the Church, and yes, they are out there, but quite another to make that knowledge the focus of your spiritual reading and growth. My advice: proceed with caution and much humility.
BLAZEr
I'm gonna agree with Dave to an extent. I find a good article in the Remant (good meaning not Schismatic or crazy) every 7 or 8 months or so. I find the Wanderer to be pretty good in general, very orhtodox, and only mildly vitriolic. Honestly though, there are only so many articles I can read about "evil" Cardinal Mahoney without starting to feel sorry for the guy. If you want a good Catholic Periodical, one that won't turn you into an angry crazy person, I recommend the following: National Catholic Register http://www.ncregister.com/current/ Traces http://www.clonline.org/infoeng.htm#traces Crisis http://www.crisismagazine.com/ First Things http://www.firstthings.com/ Catholic World Report http://www.ignatius.com/Magazines/index.asp

PedroX
Ha! Blazer and I have very similar reading lists. I'm more than a little afraid. However, as vitrolic as they might be both the Wanderer and the Remnant serve a purpose. We must not fail in praying for the coming Spring time. It has been a long Lent. peace... BLAZEr
Pedro, I'll give you a high five if you also subscribe to the Quarterly "Communio" or the magazine Image? And if you don't read Traces, I high recommend it. It's very very good, but not very well known.
annie
Is Traces a newspaper? We get the National Catholic Register and enjoy it very much. Usually something spiritually uplifting, seems very orthodox, etc. I am interested in Traces, though, if it quarterly or weekly etc. (already have too much to read! Like to stick to the basics! )
PedroX
I've never heard of "Communio" is it part of that Communion and Liberation thingy? I'll look up Traces tommorrow. I just discovered there's a ROFTers group here in Indy. I'm trying to hook up with them. peace...
BLAZEr
Communio is a scholarly Journal started up by Cardinal Ratzinger, Hans Urs Von Balthasar, and other theologians in Europe after Vatican II. It's outstanding. It treats a different theological theme each quater and incldues some articles on various aspects of the faith as well. It's serious Theology, some of the articles take me literally weeks to understand. I have to study them, not just read them. They are dope. Communio is my favorite periodical. Right now I'm waiting for my Winder 2004 Edition.

UGH ANNIE, I'm sorry evidently I can't read. I read National Catholic REGISTER as National Catholic REPORTER......two different magazines. So So Sorry. I've never read your NCR but the one I have(the Reporter) is bad news. Thank goodness for edit buttons!!!!!!
