Maria_Faustina
So, among other songs (see thread about the most annoying hymns--that's not what this thread is about, though. Go there to complain ) that have theological errors and are generally bad, "Gather us In" is one of them. I would very much love to never sing that song ever again in my life, and so I was very happy to hear when someone reliable told me it had been officially banned in the US (because of the "gather us in/the rich and the haughty" part and such). I guess I kind of assumed they had told me correctly, because I know there are requirements for hymns, and it is a bad song, and it makes sense that the USCCB would advise us not to sing songs that are obviously wrong and misleading in their content (like "Ashes": we rise again from ashes/to create ourselves anew"). I told a friend about that, and she was surprised, but agreed that the songs are incorrect, and asked to see the article/etc. saying they had actually banned it. Does anyone know if that is accurate? Or does it just fit under these requirements: http://www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2006/06-201.shtml and therefore is technically "banned"? I know I should've actually looked it up before going around telling people...I guess I got overexcited at such an wonderful possibility.. Edit: I was trying to fix the title so USCCB would be capitalized like it should be, and like I actually wrote it in the topic, but I guess you can't edit the title? Brigid
haha, I'm the friend, right? and I think my reaction was to jump around as yell "YES!" for a few minutes. but yeah, I'm definitely interested in any input anyone has. because this would be hugely exciting. (USCCB wasn't capitalized because that's the formatting the title of the thread automatically takes. I think the only way to make it all capitalized is to put spaces or something in between the letters, and no, only a mod can change the title of a thread once it's started.) Maggyie
Don't know if it came from the Vatican or the USCCB but there was recently a ruling against songs that use the name of God (Yahweh). "Yahweh, I know you are near, standing always at my siiiiiiide" is therefore disallowed, although I believe the Oregon Catholic Press or whoever is just having the songs rewritten without the Name. CatherineM
The only ones that I've heard are officially banned are the Yahweh ones.
Apotheoun
Lots of songs (I refuse to call them hymns) should be banned from the present Roman liturgy.

Wish I were kidding, but we did just that this weekend.

I've been to an Eastern Rite Mass once. I think it was Melkite. I liked it was trilingual though. Arabic, Spanish, and English. I was a little bummed about it. I expected it all in Arabic (if that was even the language they used).
doe-jo
By the way, can we still sing songs that has "Jehovah" in it or would that be the same as "Yahweh"?
Apotheoun
I would think that any attempts to pronounce the divine name should be avoided.
Formosus
I would say no. I personally do not see the need to say the name of the Father as revealed in the OT in prayer. Surely there is a reason why it was viewed as impious to say it in the OT time period. We do know the name of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity and likewise we know the name that Christ told us to refer to The Father as, and that of course is Abba or Father. : ) Just my take. On another note. Melkites can use Greek, Arabic, English, and some do use Spanish too so I have heard. While arabic is a beautiful language, the tradition of the East is to use the language of the people in worship so I wouldn't be too upset over the lack of arabic in it : p.
