Old_Joe
All 5 women of the FOCUS Missionaries here at UNL were in a car accident. One is in critical condition. Please keep them in your prayers. There's a prayer meeting for them at Newman starting soon. Here's the email I received: Dear Newman Center Students, We wanted to inform you of a current situation happening here at the Newman Center. As you may know we are blessed with the presence of 12 FOCUS missionaries. This morning they were on their way to their end of the year retreat, and 5 of the women were in a car accident. The five FOCUS missionaries in the car were Tanya Cenac, Andrea Fulcher, Ashley Haas, Brigid Patino, and Kristin Smith. Ashley is in critical condition, the other 4 are stable. They are all receiving medical assessments or treatment. Please contact the Newman Center with questions. Please pray that Our Lord and Our Lady will be present to them and their families through their suffering. Our Lady of Guadalupe. Pray for Us! I just talked with one of my friends who is Ashley's fiancee. Apparently, she's had skull fractures. She's sedated right now, but they're going wait until morning to see how she's doing. The other four are doing fine. Two have been discharged, and the other are staying overnight, but there are no serious injuries. Old_Joe
I just got back from the prayer service we had. A lot people said they were worried, but not grief stricken, at least not yet. Ashley is stable, but is still in pretty bad shape. She has multiple fractures and bruised lung. Right now they're worried about brain swelling, but we'll see in the morning. The other two are doing fine. One has a dislocated shoulder, and the other has a laceration on the back of her head. All of them are at the Nebraska medical center in Omaha. The two that were discharged are staying at a hotel nearby with their parents. Here's what Fr. Matya said on Facebook:
Today has been a difficult day, but there have been many manifestations of God's goodness made known to us throughout the day. We were able to place a first class relic of St. Faustina with Ashley right before she went into surgery - just before 3:00 p.m.! Thank you Father Mitchell for bringing the relic. We were also able to pray a rosary together this afternoon in front of a large image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Again, thanks Fr. Mitchell for bringing the image. The image of Our Lady is now looking down lovingly upon Ashley in her room. Brad and I asked the attending nurse tonight if she had seen the relic (since we couldn't find it anywhere) and she said, "Oh yeah, we taped it to her abdomen. Is that okay?" We were very grateful.
Fr. Matya said that he talked to the state trooper who arrived on the scene. Apparently, other than the accident, everything went right. The weather was clear enough that they were able to get two Life Flight Helicopters to the scene. The trooper also said that he found one of those Sacred Heart Auto League things nearby. He said he was a protestant and had always thought it was kinda weird, but that he's not making fun of it anymore. Also, Fr. Matya said that one of the women must've had a stack of prayers cards because they were all over the the car's interior. Most importantly, it happened on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. That counts for something. I'll let the pham know if anything changes. Thanks for the prayers so far. Old_Joe
One more of the women has been released from the hospital. However, Ashley is still in the same condition, but some of her facial swelling has gone down. Her family has created a website on Caringbridge.com and is updating it often.
