Arpy
I feel very afraid whenever my English teacher uses red ink. If she would use a color like blue or green, I think I would be able to manage. But as it is, I'm scared and hurt and I don't know where to turn.
Resurrexi
My English teacher puts red AARGH! stamps all over our papers. It's very scary.

I once had a teacher who used to abuse the red pen though. She almost ripped my papers several times and did rip a friend's paper pressing so hard. She was a whack job. -Katie
BG45
Mom teaches and she's not supposed to use red lest she "damage the child's self esteem".
Resurrexi
It doesn't lower my self esteem when my English teacher puts comments such as "good job," "good reasoning," and "nice to add" in red on my paper (yeah I've never actually gotten the AARGH!, but about 60-70 percent of my class has). Lounge Daddy
The Grand Rapids Public School system has started giving an "H" instead of an "F" ...I'm not sure what the thinking behind that is. But it makes me all the more thankful that my kids go to a Catholic school here.

Archaeology cat
Red is used to stand out from what the student has written. It's not to make "bad" comments (with "good" comments being in a different color). The comments get LOST without using color. Children are not the most careful observers. Left to their own devices (of locating pencil or blue/black pen comments), they wouldn't. I write positive and negative comments on my kids' papers in whatever color fine-tip crayola marker or colored pencil I happen to grab. I don't think it has harmed them in any way.
Exactly. I hated when teachers would write comments in blue or black, because it was harder to find them. My friend and I used to go over each other's papers a lot in college, and always used red. We didn't mind, even if there was a lot of red, because it was easy to see and was helpful (these were, of course, rough drafts).
Norseman82
On another note, a study was done and it found that the color red did tend to bring out aggressive tendencies in people.

icelandic_iceskater
ohmygosh! Now I know why I never could get good at math! All the problems I got wrong my mom marked in red, which I realize now must have damaged my confidence, causing more red marks, making it virtually impossible to ever improve my grades!
