Wow, I suppose it's just a matter of time before they do a study that shows that the teachers themselves are offensive to students and conclude that all teachers must be thrown out of schools to safeguard the mental health of the students.

This was the rule in the DC public schools I worked in. Not sure if it was system wide or not. I used green and purple. I didn't care about not using red, but it did seem a little silly.

I thought Australians prided themselves on being tough.

Can you see it in 20 more years, a young man sitting down for a job interview being asked about his college grades, and saying, "I got all gold stars, except for a blue star in organic chemistry."

Red is the best color to use because it's bright. Plenty of students use colored pens like pink, purple, etc.

Hmmm... I wonder if the kids who get a 100% feel offended about seeing it in red ink. ;)

red is offensive because it IS the color that teachers have used throughout time to grade papers. If the color had always been, say, green, then that color would be offensive. My 5th grade teacher used purple. When we saw purple on our papers, we were equally as worried as when we saw the red that our other teachers used. It meant the same thing.

I agree. It does seem pretty subjective - red is not "the" color.

Apparently red attracts attention more easily then other colours as well.

Example, this.

This is the same writing as the other line

This is the same writing as the other line

Which did you read first?

 Red is used to stand out from what the student has written. It's not to make "bad" comments (with "good" comments being in a different color). The comments get LOST without using color. Children are not the most careful observers. Left to their own devices (of locating pencil or blue/black pen comments), they wouldn't.

I write positive and negative comments on my kids' papers in whatever color fine-tip crayola marker or colored pencil I happen to grab. I don't think it has harmed them in any way.

I've been told by teachers that not to use read (and preferably to use blue or back) because it's difficult for them to grade tests and read assignments written in red.
