ThomasPeter
i have just noticed that the first line of the sanctus has changed. i live in south bend, IN and maybe its is only here, but the line no longer reads "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts." now it says "....God of Power and Might." why is this? i thought that the "God of Hosts" was from scipture, if so how can they change it? im kind of supprised it was changed because i thought that the sanctus was one of the older prayers in mass, meaning it would be left alone so we can keep our ties to the past. thanks for any help you can give tom
BLAZEr
Hey Thomas Peter, ummm, are you oiccic? I used to live in South Bend too. Send me a private message. Unless you have been away from the Church for a while, like since 1971, you have always heard Holy Holy Holy Lord, God of Power and Might. It's the ICEL English translation of the Latin prayer Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabbaoth. You are right, it is from scripture. It's from Isaiah 6:1-5. The literal translation should include "of Hosts" but in the Liturgy, the Church is free to use the translations it deems appropriate. That line in the liturgy may change soon, since the Vatican is set to release a document calling for some revisions in our English translation of the Latin for mass.
