LouisvilleFan
I used to play chess on facebook, but it's hard to find opponents who will keep up with a game. Of course, I think there's a whole community of chess players on facebook, like there is for poker, so it wouldn't be hard to find some players. How about you, eagle eye? Seems I'm one of only two people brave enough to take you on so far.
Lisieux Flower
I feel like I'm pretty good at strategizing when it comes to cards and other games, but I just can't do it when it comes to chess- I know how to move the pieces but I don't know how to win. How do you do it? My brother actually tried to teach me this Thanksgiving, but the game ended up being him playing against himself and me sitting there confused
Ash Wednesday
I am an occasional chess player. I really like the game but I actually get intimidated by it...or at least my opponents. So I usually just play the computer with the setting on "dumb"

Both have a wealth of books on them. I know several top chess players have switched to poker because it has more money in it. I have a bunch of chess books, and zero on poker as I just took up poker fairly recent. In chess luck has been essentially wiped out while with poker you have cards which you cannot control. Chess is easy to learn, and I would say the same for poker. Mastering either game takes a lot of time and effort. In chess though, there is more analysis that goes on. Many times after a tournament game, the two players will go through the game and look at variations whereas in poker the analysis after the round seems to be almost nonexistent because the next round just starts up. Poker seems to be more instantaneous odds and chances type decisions whereas in chess, there may be several different ways to win. Do you play yahoo or correspondence? If your up for a game PM me. What opening do you play? Do you know about development? Do you know that it is important to control the center generally? It is also important to develop your knights and bishops and get your king castled within the first 10 moves. Maybe I should post lessons through the Lame board or something........ Do you or your brother ever look at a chess book? There are several good beginner books out there. Get one out of a library or look on amazon.com for a cheap begginer book. Don't get any book out though. Chess books generally address a certain playing level and looking at something too advanced will just confuse you. Yeah, having a your brother just play against himself really doesn't work as you already know. You may also want to consider finding other people to play. Playing against a family or friend is fine, but if you really want to get better you need to find other opponents.

Otherwise, you wouldn't see career poker players or the same guys regularly winning tournaments. I think poker players do analyze how they played a tournament, where they made good or bad decisions with various hands, and they could analyze particular hands too. If there are chess players who can recall entire games from memory, I'm sure some poker players can recall entire tournaments. Also, most poker players take one of two approaches: the analytical and mathematical side that calculates odds and decides how to bet or bluff accordingly versus the psychological side that focuses more on perceiving (mostly by non-verbal cues) whether their opponent is bluffing, confident, etc. When you're good enough to lay low while the pot accumulates and then convince everybody else in the pot that your hand will beat theirs, it doesn't matter what cards you actually have. I'm definitely in this camp.
Didacus
The only person I could not beat at chess was a man named Joseph who at the time was ranked 60th in Canada. Game on!!!
