Those primitives didn't think we were individuals at all. No wonder they thought they needed people to tell them how to behave. After all, we aren't people with minds who can think! The whole concept originated in Christian theology.
Would you not say that "person" developed as a jewish concept? I am reading "The gifts of the Jews" by Thomas Cahill. He posits that a single God, not part of the eastern world view of the Great Wheel of Life, makes possible the concept of a foward-moving history, and human individuality and worth. Ancient Judaism never put forward this idea. God was, for the Jews, solitary.
dauntingknight
Yea but the media only focuses on the bad and gets people hyped up about little things. Well if you'll excuse me I need to head to the confessional.

I'm not really sure how I feel about Cahill.. he seems very liberally slanted, but knows so much.. I really didn't like how he seemed to push how the Irish didn't always go to priests for confession but rather just someone they trusted. I know there's a priest shortage, but it's not that short..
Lounge Daddy
Doesn't it seem as though the end of the world is not too far away?
It often seems that the end of my world is not too far away. By which I mean *my* end. And compared to eternity, even if I live 'till 100 it is all too short. By my own end, and the souls of my wife and kids, is what I am really interested in. All though it may seem less dramatic, it's all that I really need to be worried about.
