Fried Turkey

So, two years ago my younger brother decides he wants to have a fried turkey for thanksgiving. He talks to my mom and they decided not to bake one, at all. I wasn't even consulted. He buys the vat of expensive peanut oil, and the special vessel needed to fry the turkey. So I contest, because I am a man of strong tradition, and I love the smell of baked turkey permeating throughout the house while I watch Charlie Brown float by at the Macy's Day parade. It's the way we've always done it, that's it.

So Thanksgiving day comes. Being a novice at the whole fry a turkey thing and the fact that it was 10 degrees outside, needless to say, my bro had problems. I stood outside with him shivering over the vat of oil for an hour trying to get the temperature to the right range. It was a mess!!!!!

However, I must say that Fried Turkey is the bomb!!!! It is much more moist and tastey!!!! Now we have a new tradition, fried turkey and we still have a small baked one for effect. Charlie Brown still rocks.

Phamily rocks, I'm thankful for phatmass, my phamily, and my Universal Church.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I'd have to burn the patio down to get the peanut oil hot enough here. The firemen at the local station come to visit too often as it is. I guess people here aren't used to someone who likes to smoke meat.

Make sure you include the White Castle tirkey stuffing!

I'm just glad I was able to find a turkey this year! Unfortunately we're having to celebrate on Saturday due to work schedules and the like. :annoyed:

I might actually try goose or something. :lol_roll:

One year as a student some fellow yanks in London and I tried a duck. :lol_roll:

We really have to meet up sometime btw. It's almost a sin that we haven't. :))

We really should!

As for duck, I fix that for Christmas. Only I usually do Peking duck. And I do lamb for Easter (though I really want to do rabbit sometime).

We started frying our turkeys about the time I entered seminary seven years ago. Definitely much tastier.

Our weird family traditions include making ham (my father hates turkey) and playing Texas Hold'Em for about six hours. And football. Not playing it, but watching it. It's totally shweet.

We might have some venison this year - just found out that my cousin shot a doe last Saturday.

We're having a huge (for five people) turkey-- baked in the oven. No crazy notions of deep fried turkey here... Why not just pop it on a stick and pretend it's the State Fair?

Mmmmm..... duck.... leg of lamb.... My husband won't let me cook duck. He says it's murder. :P I haven't made lamb in quite a while, though, because invariably we have spent Easters with family or not had lamb available (Korea). For holidays when I do the cooking for just our little family I do a smallish ham and one of those little "breast only" turkeys--my husband doesn't like turkey very much so if I gave him his choice we'd only have ham. I like turkey. But as long as I make a cheesecake I'm happy. I make one for every major holiday feast.

I can sympathize there. Having made 20lb turkeys in the past.... who wants to haul a 20lb bird out of a vat of boiling oil?

I have no problem doing that. The fried bird tastes much better than the one out of the oven. My parents had a fight last year over which way we would do it. So my step-father made one in the fryer, and my mother made one in the oven. They also made 2 different kinds of stuffing. (I SECRETLY LIKE MY STEPFATHERS STUFFING AND BIRD BETTER THAN MY MOM'S BUT SHHH! DON'T TELL HER)
