annie
bro Adam, how do you like Hail, Holy Queen? I loved that book-so clear and direct. As a convert from Evangelical Christianity, I struggled with Mary- and now embrace her! What a blessing it is to have her as our Mother. The whole comparison of Mary and the Ark of the Covenant was what finally (FINALLY!) turned the lightbulb on in my head (and heart!)
Thy Geekdom Come
I should also recommend "Church History: The Catholic Church through the Ages" by Rev. Lawrence Lovasik, S.V.D. Also, "A History of Christianity" by Paul Johnson. Also "Hitler, the War, and the Pope" by Ronald J. Rychlak, which is a very well documented book on the alleged activities of Pope Pius XII during WWII.
IcePrincessKRS
Definately Warren Carroll's History of Christendom series.
These books are excellent, but they are big thick books, 4 in all, (The Founding, Building, Glory, and Cleaving of Christendom), and run around 20 bucks (sometimes more depending on where you get them) each. If you can afford them they you should invest in them. His wife, Anne W. Carrol also has a couple books, Christ the King, Lord of History is the one title that really comes to mind, that might be helpful to you as well. (Dr. Carroll has a number of other books as well.... awesome historian, awesome teacher--- yes! you all heard that right! I was taught by Dr. Carroll himself. hehe )
PhatPhred
The leaders of our RCIA class recommended Pilgrim Church by William J. Bausch. I have not read or even looked at the book myself, I'm afraid.
