Concussions

Has anyone here ever had a concussion?

Well, I had a seizure on Wednesday and gained a bump on my head from it. I thought it was fine until a few hours later I started losing my sense of balance and getting dizzy from just standing up. I went to the campus's health center yesterday, and the doctor told me to either get a friend to take me to the hospital or they would get an ambulance. <_< They wanted to do a CT scan on my brain to make sure nothing else was wrong (like bleeding). The only thing wrong was the lovely concussion that I was left with and must live with for the next few weeks.

Walking is interesting...

You must be very careful. You did have the Cat scan I hope. You should be following up with a doctor not just your campus health nurses(unless there are doctors there, I don't know). This is very serious and nothing to be taken lightly. You should be resting as much as possible and for heavens sake do not drive or do anything that requires you to be balanced. Do not sign any legal documents, they could be up for question in the future.
Do not ignore your symptoms, and it would help to have people check up on your frequently. This is not the time to be alone. If worse, get to the ER of a hospital immediately. Do not stop at any health center, go right to an ER. Keep in contact with your physician.
I know this is expensive, and not sure if you have insurance, but brain injury is no joke.
Do you have epilepsy?
Take care of yourself

That was my question as well.

If you have not been diagnosed with epilepsy, I would suggest having that checked out while you are having this incident looked at. There are medications that can be used to help manage epilepsy, as well as service animals that are trained to recognize the onset of an epileptic seizure and get you safely to the floor.

Yes, several, including a couple of grade 3's. I have post-concussion syndrome now. Can't say I recommend it. The most important thing is to not get another one anytime soon. If you get a second one in the next 6 months, the damage is logarithmic, not just additional. There is also a very rare thing that can happen to women who get a second concussion, even a very mild one, they can get a quick brain bleed and die. That's why my husband won't let me have a bicycle.

It may affect your vision. If you wear glasses, don't get the prescription changed right away because it might wobble for a month to 6 weeks before stabilizing. You may notice that you will now be more susceptible to certain kinds of light, especially bright ones and even loud noises. You can also expect to have some mild personality changes like getting irritable more easily, or having trouble with concentration. Women respond differently to concussions than men do, but because doctors are more used to dealing with men, they can miss things. Sports doctors that deal with female soccer or field hockey players, preferably at the college level, have the best training/experience in it.

Take it easy. Another concussion can also make you at a higher level to develop strokes and dementia early. Middle age is hard enough without worrying about that stuff.

Yea, yea. I have epilepsy. Where have you people been the last 5 years? :P

I went to the hospital yesterday. Had the CT scan. I have a concussion. It's not about my seizure. Seizures I am used to, concussions I am not.

(I almost replied to this thread earlier today, but then I figured I'd leave it to you.)

Oh, and sorry about the concussion. I hope it doesn't affect you too badly.
