Excelsior1027
Am I the only one who gets frustrated when seeing more than one Christmas commercial while watching football, seeing a family putting up Christmas decorations around their house, and seeing all the stores putting out their Christmas stuff--all within two days after Halloween?? I get so fed up with it year after year. It's like society is trying to milk the Christmas spirit for all its worth. Christmas is not supposed to be a 2-month long thing. Sorry, I just had to spout this off to someone. Ignore if you wish.
KnewInTheTrinity
Yep. It's crazy. What about Thanksgiving?!!? Haha... but, yeah, I went to the store today and it was already filled with Christmas stuff. : ) Hey, when Jesus is about to be born, they should prepare early... that's what I'll tell myself anyways... tehehe
Saint Therese
They're playing Christmas music already at Walnart. It makes me want to make a sign that says "ITS ONLY NOVEMBER 2!!!" and carry it around.
CatholicCid
Just take it as meaning we're that much closer to celebrating our dear Savior's birth.
Saint Therese
But they don't do it to celebrate Jesus, but to celebrate the Almighty Dollar.
Just take it as meaning we're that much closer to celebrating our dear Savior's birth.
I would, but that's what Advent is for. Nothing of the Christmas things that I've seen so far have anything to do with Our Lord, unfortunately. Maybe part of my frustration is that it seems all this early Christmas stuff is just for companies to make money. I mean, I realize Christmas sales can make or break a company's year, but is it really necessary to start this early? I guess I feel like Charlie Brown in the Peanuts Christmas Special. All this commercialization depresses me. Edited November 3, 2008 by Excelsior1027
Maximilianus
Basically, in retail Christmas starts Nov 1 and ends the 25th of December. They don't care for the Liturgical calendar much. Edited November 3, 2008 by Maximilianus
CatherineM
It gets bad here early because Thanksgiving in Canada is in October. I have school and a term paper due here on American Thanksgiving.
icelandic_iceskater
What really ticks me off is when its Christmas day and I'm driving home from grandma's, we'll always pass a few houses who already have the tree out on the side of the road ready for pickup. My husband's family has the tree up & decorated from Christmas Eve until Epiphany, so that's what we do, too.
Tufsoles
Yeah, yesterday when I was in Walmart trying to buy bodywash, I was going past the garden center and I saw the faux christmas trees and outdoor decor. I was like what happened to the day after Thanksgiving when all the christmas season started. Advent and Ephiany is enough for me thank you very much. StMichael
Yes, "christmas" selling season is here sooner than ever. I work in the ad biz and it is shocking every media outlet that Wal Mart was rolling it out 2 days after halloween. In NYC, Macy's is trying to get you to buy now and pay it off weekly leading up to December (basically a lay-a-away) to spur sales. We're going to see a ton of new ways to get us to spend what we don't have.
Madame Vengier
Yes, a lot of places do it for the Thanksgiving travel crowd. I know of a great Catholic bookstore/giftshop out this way that already has Christmas cards, nativity sets, etc. on sale. In this case it's necessary b/c so many tourists will come to DC between now and Christmas. It's not just to be commercial and greedy.
