Jake Huether
Looks good to me. They are blind to their arguement. No where in Scripture, does Scripture claim it's own crown. It was, in fact, the Church that wrote the entire NT. And it was the Church who picked which writings were and were not Scripture. So, then, how could they (Protestants) explain that Scripture has authority over those, by whose authority itself was chosen? If they Bible dropped out of Heaven, then I would believe in Sola Scriptura.
Gray Eminence
Laudetur Jesus Christus. It's probably just me, but, personally, I find your dialogue with Mustbenothing rather hard to follow and digest, partly because it seems to be going in multiple directions at once (and that is mainly his fault). I hope more experienced warriors come to your aid, but I think you can be proud of the way you are handling yourself in this debate. My gut tells me that it would be best to 1) narrow the focus of your dialogue to a single key point; 2) draw him into explaining more thoroughly what he believes and what it means; 3) do not get distracted in your replies or go off on tangents, but keep them narrow and make him express himself thoroughly enough so that you will have a real and comprehensive grasp of his position; 4) once you know his position thoroughly, express the teaching of the Church regarding the given key point, but only to the extent that you feel sure that he would agree with what you say; 5) build slowly from there; 6) when the dialogue degenerates, go back to 1 above: refocus, make him explain himself thoroughly, etc. I’m thinking that our respective sides (his and ours) are misconnecting and talking past each other on points where we fundamentally agree, although some people just like to argue and disagree (in which case, at some point, you just have to shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them and preach the good news elsewhere). I would not go immediately after the obvious flaws of his arguments: e.g., his circular sola scriptura argument – ignoring the obvious ecclesial context of what Paul is saying to Timothy in 2 Tim 3:17 as Jake says; his misunderstanding of ex opera operato; his argument by name-calling, e.g., “sacerdotalism;” etc. Be stouthearted and trust in the Lord.
