Which Translation Do You Prefer?

Even though the Tetragrammaton is written in the Jerusalem Bible readings for the Mass sheet at my parish, it isn't used in the actual lectionary. So no problem with my parish at least.

I use the RSV-CE for reading and bounce it off the NAB when studying. I use the 2nd edition of the RSV-CE as what I understand, it drops the "thee" and "thou" and makes a few translation corrections. I don't like the NRSV. Other than PC, the organization of the one we use at church drives me nuts. I have not read the New Jerusalem or Douay-Rheims bibles.

i use NAB most often at home and for talks, since it's what we hear at Mass; RSV Catholic in English for Bible Study; New Jerusalem in the original French is my favorite.

I do have about 4-5 - in different rooms! I have Strong's, of course - but only use the big ole thing if I can't find something.

biblos.com makes me so, so, SO happy. Shortly I'll need to start a project comparing Gospel passages, including the Greek, and that website is at the TOP of my online resources list

We have the NKJV and NIV here (no Catholic version yet), as well as Luther's German translation (my native tongue) - which contains the apokrypha, unlike the other two. The Lutherbibel is not that easy to read - German can be hard to follow at times, and there are better German Bibles out there these days. The NIV seems too watered down. Of the three I like the NKJV best.

Seems the RSV is one version that appeals widely to Catholics and Protestants. I have the Ignatius RSV-Catholic Edition. I once had a small New Living Translation that I enjoyed and still have an NIV. While recently reading St. Francis de Sales' "Finding God's Will for You," I couldn't help but notice the beauty of the Douay-Rheims passages... especially the Psalms, it's like reading poetry... which the Psalms are, but much of the poetic beauty is lost when translated out of the Hebrew, although the D-R seems to retain it.

Hi Jon. By the way in that quote I meant to say "Now" instead of "No." It's too bad that there's no concordance to the RSV-CE (2.)

Are you subscribed to it under Control Panel - View Topics? Check your e-mail's spam folder too. I know Yahoo gets a little too hungry sometimes.

So, what did you find out about translation preferences? I wouldn't expect to find many common translations, except for the RSV that I mentioned before, and in that case largely because they have a Catholic Edition with about 50 or 60 words or phrases translated differently from the RSV. But, most of the popular Protestant translations are very good, save for those books that are missing.

My conclusion is I must buy a Douay-Rhiems and a Jerusalem Bible. Also, I'll stay with my RSV.
I was surprised so many preferred it. Good, since that's the one I use - by coincidence.
