That's sad. And everyone goes to Communion right?
Same at my parish. And after Mass it sounds like a sporting event when people exit the church.
Yup, you've got it exactly. It's also terribly noisy before Mass, and there are quite a few people who get Communion and keep on going right out the door. Now that makes me angry.
Pope Paul VI (Febuary 21, 1971) Commenting on the life of Padre Pio
"Look what fame he had, what a worldwide following gathered around him! But why? Perhaps because he was a philosopher? Because he was wise? Because he had resources at his disposal? Because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from dawn to dusk and was-it is not easy to say it-one who bore the wounds of our Lord. He was a man of prayer and suffering."
http://saints.sqpn.com/saintp27.htm
In my personal opinion, when properly disposed and prepared, weekly reception of the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) can be very beneficial. While the strains on the Priesthood I would presume to be difficult, I think that confessions should be heard thirty minutes before and after every Mass, at the very "least".

Someone once told me that Saint Pio of Pietrelcina advised that one should confess at least once a month, but that if one truly cared about their soul, to confess once a week. I have never verified this so this could easily be wrong...

My parish offers it an hour every Saturday late morning/early afternoon.

However, I work near downtown Chicago, and there is a parish there (St. Peters in the Loop) that attracts the downtown workers and offers confessions M-F from 7:30 AM to 6PM and noon-4:30 on Saturday.

My parish has Adoration from 3:30pm-5:25pm Saturday (sometimes priest gets there early and opens it at 2-2:30), and confessions from 4pm-5pm on Saturdays only.

The priest however is ALWAYS willing to hear confessions if you pull him aside. Maybe 10 people go to scheduled confession in a good week. Parish of 800 families.

At my school, FUS, confession is offered mon-thurs for 1 hour a day with anywhere from 5-9 priests hearing confessions. Lines go out to the door. Maybe 150 people go to confession a day, could be off and it be even more though. That is aside from all of the people that confess to their spiritual director or pull a priest aside (very common).
The local parish that my school is under has confessions Saturday for 2-3 hours maybe, and 2 priests usually hearing confessions. An Opus Dei priest comes from Pittsburgh and hear's confessions from 2-6pm on friday's. LOTS of opportunity to confess at school (specially when your teacher is a priest, catch him after class)

That's horrible! Canon law states that no priest may refuse to hear the confession of anyone who makes a reasonable request for it.

My parish has confessions before EVERY Mass -- weekday and Sunday alike (15 minutes before every daily Mass, 30 minutes before every Sunday Mass). There are also confessions during the Friday evening holy hour. I don't know if both priests are typically available to hear confessions on weekdays (although it was definitely the case with our previous 2 priests), but both sure do hear confessions on Sundays. When it's time for one to get ready for Mass, the other continues hearing them right up until the Epistle of the Mass. And there's always a line.

Interestingly, I go to confession one of 2 churches. 1) my parish, 2) a church by my work.

My parish offers it once a week (Sat) and for an hour. Hardly ever more that 4 people there.

The church by my work offers every weekday for a 1/2 hour - 45 minutes before the 5pm daily Mass, and on Sat for an hour. There is ALWAYS a crowd.

I think if parishes offered it more often, 'attendance' might actually increase.

I clicked on "one hour," but our parish had to extend it to an hour and a half.
Our pastor is so pleased. There is a line up, whether there is a holy day or not.

And the Cathedral here has two Masses a day on weekdays, with Confession after every Mass. And then Confession available twice on Saturday as well. The confessional is always busy. The Mass is always packed. As it should be! :smokey:

My parish friggin' rocks. 20 minutes before every daily mass (there are two each day). Then three confessors during weekend masses (five). And then confession at these times throughout the week:

Tues. 9:30-12:15
Wed. 4:30-5:20
Thurs. 11-1, 3:30-5:30
Sat. 10-1:30, 4-5

It's so accessible ... I'm spoiled. :D
