Saint Therese

I used to be skeptical about Marian devotion, but not anymore. I pray the Rosary, and the Little Office of the BVM (recommend that too), and have a great devotion to the Mother of God.

The church I usually go to offers it on a Saturday for two half hour periods. I'm also near a university chaplaincy, which I think offers it at least four days a week and there's a cathedral and a large city centre church which both have confession for multiple hours on a Saturday. I have no excuse!

My parish offers it on Saturdays for 30 minutes, but the priest isn't usually in the confessional unless the sacristan goes to tell him someone wants to confess. So I usually go to the Cathedral, since they have it every day.

DiscerningSoul
I decided to start this thread because I'm very curious about the practice of confession especially in this country. It seems that everyone goes to Communion and hardly anyone goes to confession. Your input/comments are appreciated.
My home parish we don't have a pastor so you have to grab the priest when he comes.
at the Basilica they offer it almost everyday: http://www.theimmaculate.com/ChurchInfo.htm
Speak of, I need to go now so I can make to Mass on time. LOL :saint:

Depending on the church by me (just a few miles apart) its once a week and there's either a line or there's barely anyone there. Sometimes even the priest doesn't show up, haha. The last two times I've tried to go to confession there have been weddings, special events, etc at the church. The rosary has helped me immensely as well.

Every Saturday for about 30-45 minutes before each of the two Vigil Masses. It's also any time by appointment and for another 45 minutes before our Padre Pio Prayer Gathering, which is held once a month on Sundays. There's usually more times made across the whole town as the Sacred Triduum nears, as well.

The Cathedral Parish would have a Priest hear confessions for about thirty minutes before every Mass, along with confessions for an hour on Saturday.

The Priest (Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter) who says the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite (Missal of Blessed Pope John XXIII) in our Diocese hears confessions for about thirty minutes before and after, what is sometimes called, the "Latin Mass".

Other Parishes in my area will have a Priest, sometimes two Priests, hear confessions on Saturday before the Vigil Mass.

The Franciscan Parish in particular, in response to the calling of Pope John Paul II, offers on the First Wednesday of every month "Exposed" Adoration and Confessions for nearly three to four hours, and at the end Benediction.

In my personal opinion, there should be a broader offering of the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) and the Sacrament of the Eucharist, namely the Holy Mass and Adoration.

My church has confession every day for as long as necessary, and starts confession half hour before every Sunday mass, through the homily (liturgy of the word). There are often 2 or 3 priests hearing confession.

The more opportunities, the more penetants. The more the sacrament is seen as important, the more it will be important. Offering it only 1x a week, or less, makes parishioners think that it's not all that important, and decreases demand because they don't go.

It's the priests who need to be sitting in the confessional as is their job, and calling, regardless of whether they think anyone is going to come. They can use that time to catch up on correspondence or reading or just pray, but there's no reason they can't be in the confessional for at least half an hour every day. Seriously. I know they're busy, but that's a lunch break. We're such a lazy culture.

My parish at school offers it half an hour before every Sunday Mass (including Saturday vigil), and half an hour before the 7 pm Wednesday Mass. Most parishes here, though, just offer it just after the Saturday morning Mass, or before the Saturday vigil Mass.

Domine ut Videam

Well my 'parish' (I'm in college, so this would be my home parish) offers it every Sat for 1 hour. At school it is offered before every Mass, so that would be 5 half hours, as well as by appt. Living with a religious community means that we have no shortage of priests, thus no excuse not to get to confession.

And whoever said that if it is offered demand will go up is certainly right. There are always huge lines at any confession at my school, people still don't get to go and have to make appts because it is emphasized and offered. However, at my home parish where it is only offered once a week there is probably on average 5 people total who utilize that sacrament.

That's sad. And everyone goes to Communion right?
Same at my parish. And after Mass it sounds like a sporting event when people exit the church.
