A friend told me that the Corpus Christi Monastery of Dominican nuns from the Bronx sent 3 nuns and founded a new Dominican monastery in Delaware. I found this site just now on them:

Well I'll be....

I corresponded with Sr. Mary Grace, OP of the Bronx monastery, just very briefly, about a year ago and she mentioned a new project in the works for Delaware, but I didn't think they were going to start a new monastery all by themselves - there weren't that many of them at the Bronx monastery to start with!

It's an act of faith and trust on the part of all involved, and I hope we'll all pray for the Bronx community (now the oldest Dominican monastery in the country, since the one in Newark/Union City closed) and for the new venture as well.

the sisters that started Benincasa from the Bronx monastery left the Bronx monastery...they were not sent from the Bronx monastery to begin a new foundation.

In order for a Dominican monastery to begin a new foundation:

** they need to be asked by the bishop to come in
** have enough sisters to send at least 9 to begin the foundation
** and the home monastery has to be able to support the new foundation until the new foundation is able to be self-sufficient.

The Bronx monastery does not have enough sisters to begin a new foundation.

At Benincasa, there are two sisters that were in the Bronx monastery, and one from another monastery.

Just thought I'd add a few facts.

One of the foundresses of Caterina Benincasa is very close to my heart. She might have been my novice mistress had I entered the Monastery of the Holy Name in Cincinnati, OH, back in the 80s when God had invited me to do so.

The nun in question went to the monastery in Washington, D.C., after Holy Name's suppression.

Then she took part in another venture--Mater Ecclesia Institute at Holy Name--which had been a Dominican project. They held ecumenical retreats, and worked closely with other Christian denominations. One of her sisters from the original Holy Name community joined her. After 10 years, the effort was suppressed.

My dear sister went to the Bronx after that. Now she's in Delaware.

What's important is that they are open to where the Holy Ghost wants them. It's also important that they tried. Only God knows what came of their previous efforts.

The friars are always looking to establish more monasteries of their second order, always gentle negotiations and discernment taking place. None of this should be seen as three rebellious nuns leaving in a huff--which is ALMOST how it's been made out to be.

If you'd like, I can email her and see just how things came about.

Blessings,
Gemma

+Praised be Jesus Christ!

I looked at the website (I like that you need a password) but only saw the picture of the artist Sister. I thought Bronx Monastery wore the complete/traditional habit with the wimple, but according to the picture, that didn't seem to be the case. Does anybody know?

Thanks for the clarification, Gemma. You did correct what seemed to be a different perspective.

Thankfully,

Both Bronx and Caterina nuns wear the modified veil. The Bronx nuns used to wear the full wimple, but I'm not sure when they changed to the modified veil.

Quick question: Are there any Dominicans left that wear the complete habit? I believe the Lockport Dominicans do, and I have seen (on their beautiful website) that it looks like maybe Menlo Park is going back to the original habit. (Could it be or is that just my imagination?!) The wimple adds so much beauty and tradition to the habit, it is hard for me to understand why so many retained the holy habit but got rid of that piece. I am also thinking Marbury does - is that right? I think now that "school" has started and we are back to the books, my head is filled with too much to keep these "little" but important! things straight!

I often print out articles on religious life or on different orders for the Vocation Mistress at my daughter's Carmel. I know she sometimes shares them at recreation, for they do pray for the Church in general, and of course, vocations. I would love to send her pictures of a traditional Dominican Monastery with the full habit.

Daughter Number 2 really thought about the Dominicans, but she wanted the full habit, which, if it pleases God, she will one day wear as a Benedictine Nun.

God bless all,
TradMom

Yup, TradMom, the Marbury monastery wears the full traditional habit. I've been receiving their newsletter ever since I made a donation to them following the entrance of a former phatmasser. They are a small community and could sure use a few new vocations  .

The Buffalo Dominicans wear the full habit - http://www.dominicannunsofbuffalo.org/ and so do the Linden, VA Dominicans I believe at http://www.lindenopnuns.org/home.html - when this site was first up, there was a picture of the prioress in a full habit talking to one of the builders.

I have links here, don't know if they will work. These are THE SAME ENTRY, just two different formats -- one is a PDF file. I provide them because no previous post on this thread supplies this information. To summarize:
in 2008, when the OP began this thread, the three Second Order OP nuns were already in touch with Elmira, New York (directly north of Pennsylvania, if you check the map) where the Dominican nuns have the Monastery of Mary the Queen.
After leaving Cincinnati, Ohio, where her Dominican monastery had been suppressed, then going to the District of Columbia and having THAT Dominican monastery suppressed as well, the Sister who co-founded the Delaware group lived in the Bronx/Hunts Point monastery of Corpus Christi.
There is no statement here, as to why the nuns in Delaware, at Benincasa monastery, prefer Elmira's Mary the Queen Monastery over Hunts Point's Corpus Christi Monastery to be their mother founding monastery. However, these links come from Elmira and its prioress Sr. Miriam.
