Ecumenicism

The issue of not worshipping in other churches has come up in another thread. What do you think about ecumenicism?
There are ecumenical services held in the UK where people from various churches come together to worship - personally I don't find the services that wonderful as in order not to offend anyone they seem to be completely 'watered down' in my opinion!
In my diocese there are five ecumenical parishes where the ownership of the church is shared between denominations!
If catholics should not worship in other churches why would the clergy endorse ecumenicism?

Thy Geekdom Come

Ecumenism is the Church's attempt at fulfilling Christ's wish that "they may be one."

The Church's endorsement of ecumenism does not endorse other religions as being completely correct, but it recognizes other Christians as having aspects of the truth and joining them in that truth to worship the One True God.

Catholics can go to non-Catholic services, as far as I understand, but that service cannot replace the Mass. If a Catholic, for instance, goes to a Baptist Church on a Sunday, he must still go to Mass also. We also cannot accept non-Catholic doctrines.

I remember when I was little and I asked my mother why we didn't just go to the Interdenominational Church, since we were all Christians. She said that they weren't Catholic. That didn't make any sense to me then, because I still figured, "But we're Christians!"

In retrospect, it is because non-Catholics (except for the Orthodox) do not have the Eucharist. The Real Presence does not exist in their churchs. Don't get me wrong...God is there, moving within them, but not in Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity.

God Conquers

At my University the various Christian groups work together to evangelize on campus.

Every few months we have ecumenical worship, but its just P+W, and that's hard enough to pleas everyone with.... I shudder to think what a regular sunday service would be like... communion would be the most difficult.

I thought that when I read the definition in the dictionary 'the aim of unity among all christian churches throughout the world'!!

Do you think the protestant churches have sussed that yet?!

Credo in.... unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam ecclesiam

Our separated brethren et al may suspect that our ultimate goal is to bring them back into the arms of Holy Mother Church (duh) but may think that those of us who think that are still in the early stages of the ecumenical mindset.

If that's what they think, let em! :D

Seriously, if we pursue ecumenism properly, without slipping into problematic things such as illicit syncretism or sharing of communion or – God forbid -- watering down the Faith, I believe that in God’s good time more and more will return to the fold (and that much good work can be done meanwhile).
