DojoGrant
As seminarians, deacons, priests...what would you recommend as the best Bible commentary book out there for a Catholic to have as his/her Bible companion? I really, really want to get one, but I want to ensure Catholic orthodoxy. I've come across the New Jerome Bible Commentary but periodically see it called very liberal. What do you guys use? Pio Nono
JMJ 3/7 - Second Sunday of Lent DojoGrant, I personally know of two good commentaries on Holy Scripture. The first is the Haydock Commentary on the Douay-Rheims Bible. It usually comes in a $99 set. Fr. Haydock gives his readers numerous apologetic, spiritual, and doctrinal insights into Holy Scripture, placing special emphasis on the apologetical content of certain passages. Another good commentary is the Navarre Bible, an as-yet unfinished commentary on Sacred Scripture started by St. Josemaria Escriva. Scepter Publications (I think) puts it out in various volumes that can range in cost from $15 up. If anyone else knows of any good commentaries besides, please post them here. Peace. Yours, Pio Nono
Carson Weber
Dr. Hahn and Curtis Mitch are currently publishing the Ignatius Catholic Study Bibles, which are excellent. So far the Gospels, Acts, and Romans have been published, and 1/2 Corinthains are out next. When the whole Bible is finished (in about four years), the entire commentary will be compiled in one volume.. this is some of the best work I've seen so far. It's an excellent compilation. With regard to Bible dictionaries, I suggest the Anchor Bible Dictionary (6 volumes) as well as the HarperCollins and the Eerdmans. The International Bible Commentary is also good. It's Ecumenical with a Catholic editor (William Farmer). For online commentary, I wholly suggest http://www.scborromeo.org/index2.htm However, it's lectionary based.
