What Would The 16-year-old Version Of Yourself

Ash Wednesday

Recommended Posts

I had no idea where my life was going at 16. I do know that my 16-year-old self would never have imagined that I would have been in and out of monastic life by age 19, and by 23 I would be marrying a Peruvian. Ever. My teenage self also would NEVER have imagined that I would major in Classics. I hated Latin in high school. But there are a lot of things that I think, had I known that religious life wasn't going to work out and had been able to have forethought about an alternate lifestyle, would not surprise her if she saw me now (i.e., she would think it was pretty cool that I longboard, go to the beach all the time, and still go to the gym every day). Yeah, come to think of it, I think my 16-year-old self would think that my life didn't turn out too shabby after all.

Past-me: "You could be doing better. But I am glad we continued to mature."

Present-me: "Listen to you're father more."

Future me: "Only if you knew!!!"

"Okay, wait...you're actually going to be a mom? Well, I mean, you ARE a mom? And you're married. Ha! EAT THAT Ms. K! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Wait! He was a football player? IS it..? No? Oh...then why the heck did you marry a FOOTBALL PLAYER? Don't you remember who you are? You're a theatre geek! You're heart belongs to the theatre! What about Theatre Royal? What about the hot waiter at the Sugar Reef? C'mon girl! What were you thinking? WAIT A SECOND! You met him on the internet? DO MOM AND DAD KNOW? BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE! Well, at least he's Catholic, they should be happy about that!

Whoa, you had a heart operation? Does this mean I can get a note to skip gym? Cuz that would be amesome. And you majored in WHAT? Exercise Science? Okay, I get that you're a geek, and that science part, but, um, hello, remember THEATRE, not EXERCISE. Did you just miss that part where you had a HOLE in your HEART? Hold on, hold on. So, you went to grad school AFTER that? Love, I know you're a geek, but that's just too much school! AND NOW YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO DO IT! Well, at least you mentioned it to me! I won't waste my time! I'll just move on to that getting married and having babies part! You don't have a job? So what. You're going to be a stay-at-home mom, anyway. Oh...student loans? But I don't WANT to write papers for scholarships! That's so boring! But I guess what Grandpa said was true, you don't know where you're going till you get there!

But hey, you've found a great group of Catholics to hang out with. And you've got friends and a family who loves you, and a wonderful, amazing husband, with a baby on the way. And you made it, love. You made it, this far. You can do it. You've always been a fighter. Just remember, never stop moving forward. Never forget that day in the haunted hallway."

Past Me: What do you mean you're still in school? And not for what we always intended to be at that? Working on a doctorate?! Still single, I'm not that surprised, you were always fat and ugly. What do you mean Catholic? Catholicism is evil man, that's what we've always been taught and every Catholic we've known has shown us that it's in no way Christian. Scott Hahn? Who is Scott Hahn and how did he change your mind? Did we ever get out of McDonalds? Cool, at least there's that and you're just doing research or something. You go to bars to discuss theology? What the heck happened to you man?

Present Me: ...you're mean.

MeteorShower

well, I'm 16 right now, so I guess I can't really answer this :P

Hopefully I would have only good things to say to my future self 10 years from now

My 16 year old self would probably be very proud of me for getting most of the control over my anxiety disorder and depression. Back then, it was truly awful. I could barely function and was a constant mess. My guy friend died in a tragic car accident the day before I got my learner's permit (I didn't find out until that Sunday when it was announced in Church during the prayer intentions). I've come a long way since then. :)
