I've been in the accelerator (at the CMS and ATLAS sites). It was fun.

I do hope they don't blow too many protons apart. Those poor particles.

As long as they leave the photons alone. They are Catholic, you know...

Ha. If the world is going to end, it may not be for a few weeks or months. They turned it on today, but it will be a while before they get to actually smashing the particles.

Did you actually read the thread?

This was already pointed out.

The main purpose: prove whether All We Think We Know about What Stuff's Made Of is right or wrong.

They're looking for a special type of particle. The accelerator is made in such a way that the particle HAS to show up, if it exists. If it doesn't, there's going to be a lot of work for the theoretical physicists! :)

What if instead of this alleged particle, they just manage to summon the Great and Mighty Cthulhu? What then?

Then we'll be eating squid for a long time, and I'm allowed to whine about it most, being a physics student AND a vegetarian. Twice as much work for me :(

A mate of mine works at CERN. Over the past couple of days I've been thinking seriously about spamming his Facebook page like nothing else!
