Hey Pham,

A friend and I are making a mini-nun run in the'Lou over a long weekend in about 1 1/2 months. Neither of us are from the area. Any suggestions on communities to visit? Thanks in advance.

Your Sister in Christ,
Lauren

I know the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters have a convent there. I have always wanted to see these sisters in person. http://www.mountgraceconvent.org/

Here's a page from the website of the St. Louis Diocese on women's religious orders. It lists the Carmelites, Holy Spirit Sisters, Passionist sisters, and there are Poor Clare nuns in St. Louis, etc.

We went on a cloistered nun run here about a year or two ago and saw both of these communities (the Poor Clares in Belleville and the "Pink" sisters. We also visited the Passionist Nuns in Kirkwood (info on the helpful link from Laudem Gloriae.

Oh yes! They have their novitiate here now, too. And Sr. Carmen Christi would welcome visitors I'm sure. If you need her contact info, you can PM me.

Other communities nearby:
- Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus
- Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus- both their vocation directors (and a novice) are here in town (even though it's not their provincilate). They have a large retreat house if you need a place to stay. PM me if you need contact info, or pull off their website.
- Franciscan Sisters of the Martyr St. George- I don't know if you'll have access to a car, but they're a bit more than an hour away and a lovely community.

There are many other communities here, including large houses of Daughters of Charity (of whom a friend of mine is a postulant) as well as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet (of whom another friend is a second year novice). And there are many Sisters of Mercy here, too. If you want contacts for any of them, I probably have that as well. :topsy:

I would include the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in nearby Alton IL, they are practically in the backyard of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
We also have a province of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and a motherhouse of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd located near the University of Missouri-St. Louis. We have a small house of the Sisters of Our Lady of Peace, a community that is not well known. We have the Visitation Sisters (second Federation) that operate an academy on their monastery grounds.
Are you looking mainly at habited communities? If not, we also have the motherhouse of the Sisters of the Precious Blood in O'Fallon, MO and the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. Have a great visit, and if you need any more information, please PM me and I will try to help.

Now where is shortnun? She went on one of these a while back. She could be of some help here too!

There's a great little Sisters of the Poor house in St. Louis, but I guess it would depend on what kind of community you wanted to visit.
For active/active contemplative, you have:
Little Sisters of the Poor
Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus
Franciscan Sisters of the Martyr St. George
The Nashville Dominicans
The Daughters of St. Paul
The Daughters of Charity
The Good Shepherd Sisters
The Daughters of Mary, Mother of Israel's Hope (although I don't know if they're accepting visitors just yet
The Visitation Sisters (who could really fall into either category)
The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
(and I'm pretty sure I'm not hitting them all...)

For contemplative/monastic you have
The Visitation Sisters (might as well throw them in both)
The Carmelites in Clayton (OCD?)
The Poor Clares (South County)
The Passionists (Ellisville)
The Pink Sisters (North St. Louis)
The Redemptorisitines (further out in Ligouri, MO)

Goodness, that's all I can think of now. Have a great time in my hometown!

In Jesus and Mary,
Lauren

Wow! You guys are quick! Thanks for all the info. One more question/or addition rather. we are indeed looking for habited orders and also seeing as we don't have much time in St. Louis (only 2 1/2 days) have any of you visited any of these, where did you have the best visits, recieve the best advice, etc...

Right now we are for sure going to visit:

Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus
Passionists
Discalced Carmelites

I was going to recommend the Carmelite DCJs :) Their motherhouse is in the Netherlands and I met several sisters from the States (like their current Superior General) there, which was very nice.
