she_who_is_not
Indulge my law student brain and consider a little hypo I cooked up this morning. You are confirmed by a bishop who is Anglican or SSPX or something similar and after said confirmation that Bishop joins into full communion with the church, his holy orders are validated or whatnot (not completely sure how that works) and you jump on the pleasure cruise across the Tiber with him. Are you confirmed?
Thy Geekdom Come
The SSPX has sacraments that are valid, but illicit, meaning that the sacraments "take," but were done illegally. The Anglican Church does not have valid sacraments at all. The reason is that there is a difference in apostolic succession between the two: at some point after the institution of the Church of England, the validly ordained bishops who followed Henry VIII into schism did not pass on their Holy Orders correctly, such that Anglican priesthood became something fundamentally different from authentic Christian ministerial priesthood. Future generations of Anglicans, therefore, suffered the loss of valid sacraments (except Baptism) because their priests were not validly ordained. The SSPX bishops, despite being excommunicated, were validly ordained and therefore have the power (although not the legal authority within the Church) to ordain. SSPX ordinations are valid, and so the sacraments conferred by SSPX clergy are also valid, but highly illicit. So if one were confirmed by an SSPX bishop, the person would truly be confirmed even before the bishop and confirmand returned to Rome. If, however, one were confirmed by an Anglican bishop, the confirmation would not be valid even if the bishop returned to Rome. In such a case, if the person "confirmed" wished to return to Rome, a valid Confirmation would be part of the process, as that would be included in the Easter Vigil Mass. I hope this helps. God bless, Micah
