St Malachy And Papal Prophecy

Forgive my ignorance but I had never heard of these prophecies until my pastor mentioned them in a homily very briefly.

Are these for real? Has the Church taken a position on this?

My pastor also mentioned that the earliest version does not mention the 112th pope - Peter the Roman and that was added later. Does anyone know about this?

Not really. It's considered a private revelation that some people think may, in it's current form, be a forgery. Those who espouse this theory claim that at one time we had these procheis, but they were lost and replaced by people with alternative interests.

The only thing I know about "Peter the Roman" is that he was the last Pope on the list. Benedict is second to last, by the way, and some proponents speculate that the end of the world is nigh because of it. Not all of them think that though. Some point out that the document doesn't expelcity mention that Peter the Roman would be the last Pope in history. The list of the visions just ends with him.

Personally, I look at the whole thing with a lot of suspicion myself. The history behind makes for some interesting reading, but it is unapproved as far as I know.

I heard that although "Peter the Roman" is mentioned as the last Pope, there's no explicit mention that he's going to be the Pope after Benedict. So there could be another 5 Popes before this Peter character. But like you said, it's sort of suspicious so there could be tons of theories out there.

Out of sheer curiosity, how many Popes have there been? Does anyone know offhand? :topsy:

as far as I know they are considered by anyone I respect as a theologian/philosopher/teacher/anyone with any experience or authority to be a forgery. Also I think that some of the earlier prophecies in this set are pretty strong, but as they go on they get more and more vague, so it's hard for me to give them much real credence as they can be stretched to apply to a number of possibilities. I don't give them any real consideration other than as an interesting hypothetical.

Yeah, St Malachy's prophecies are fun to look at and try to match up with the actual popes that we have had, but towards the end you reaaaaallly have to start to stretch to make them fit. Like I think Benedict XVI is supposed to be the "glory of the olives." He doesn't really have anything to do with olives but people have tried to say well, maybe he will be a peace-making pope, you know with the "olive branch" thing.

They are a cool thing to bring up at parties but nobody with an education takes them seriously :)

The Annuario Pontificio lists Benedict as the 265th pope.
