Latin Isn't Dead! To Those

Recommended Posts

I have heard from a few people when I say, I know latin, they say who do you talk to latin with. I never respond since I say latin prayers. Anyways, Latin is not dead as people refer to it as. Everything everywhere, most likely derived from Latin. For instance your Pectoral muscle, was name pectoral, since Pectra is Latin for Heart. There are many words derived from latin, thusforth then Latin is not dead, but kept alive!

Sigh.

Rev, Latin is dead in that it has none of the following:

1. Native speakers
2. A literary life
3. Spoken popular usage

Latin is dead - it has ceased to grow and evolve as language does. It is stagnant. Distant.

"Derived from Latin" is not the same as "Latin." The intelligibility rating between, say, French and Italian, both romance langauges, is something like 30%. An Italian and a Frenchman are unable to understand each other. They aren't speaking the same language.

Latin survives only as the official language of the Roman Catholic Church and in scientific terminology, but there are no two people in the world with Latin as their primary or even secondary tongue.

Latin is as dead as Old Church Slavonic and Aramaic.

Mary's Knight, La

seatbelt there is a small town that is still native aramaic speakers so perhaps latin is exactly as dead as aramaic but that's still alive and kicking

I love Latin, too.
My daughter will be learning Latin next year... hmmm... maybe I could teach it to her now, get really fluent in it myself and only speak to our baby in Latin... then he could be a native speaker... Hmmm... I'll have to talk this over with my hubby...

1. The Vatican official Language is Latin (thus there are new words all the time)
2. The Pope writes all his documents, and all the church documents in Latin
3. There are several festavels throught the world were entire towns for weeks will only speak latin, my friends and tell jokes in Latin, speak it all the time to each other.

Thus why it may be ill, it is still thriving in pockets. Plus I believe that Romainian is so close that you could speak latin and they would get it...

I used to listen to a news summary in Latin every week.

Its only dead to those who won't learn it. :)

I took Latin in school and the teacher was quite fluent. He made us learn conversational latin because he didn't like the traditional approach to teaching latin because he thought it was too artificial, not how we naturally learn a language.
So I suppose there are people dispersed about who could speak latin if they wanted to. I also had a friend who composed poetry and wrote stories in latin. That would be cool if it somehow managed to make a come back. :)

One thing I really enjoyed about the Passion was listening to the Latin conversations.
