it'a really tough for those who are ignorant and uneducated and don't know that the storm is coming. it's hard to be;lieve but there's probably a good number of people who live in the middle of nowhere and have no clue.

people and the community need to get out there and let them know. I know here, the police department makes sure by making house calls. They've done so in the past.

prayers.

Saint Therese

The Dominican Nuns of the monastery of the Heart of Jesus are right in the path of the storm. THey are about sixty miles southwest of New Orleans. The professed sisters aren't going to evacuate.

The hurricane actually weakened before it hit land I heard, thankfully. The media is saying the damage appears to be minimal and the evacuations went very well.

praise God for bunches of answered prayers.

it unexpectedly weakened before making landfall all the way down to a cat 2. in my city there's some damage and tons of branches and a few trees down everywhere but nothing we haven't had before. this was the biggest evacuation ever staged before in Louisiana and it went so much more smoothly than it has in the past.

so for those of you who've never had the chance to be in a hurricane, this is a piece of what you come home to.

your yard is a darker green because you can hardly see the grass for all the leaves everywhere on it

you now have a 8pm -6am curfew as does everyone and their mother

streetlights are out everywhere. it becomes a city of 4 way stops.

the few food stores and restaurants that are open are jam packed.

you leave to evacuate and clean out your fridge so that when you lose power your house doesn't reek, but then you don't have any food when you get home

you rue the day you ever stocked up on shrimp stock in the freezer becuase when it melted it now smells SO BAD (we force my mom every year to throw out her shrimp stock so we don't come home to a house smelling like a shrimp boat)

everyone goes around in filthy work clothes because you don't bother changing out of it you're jsut going to get dirty again. plus, you may not have running water.

gas station roofs are particularly vulnerable to winds....

you text everyone you ever knew to make sure they're all alright. it's hard to do much more than text because cell phone service is poor and overloaded.

streets are lined with debris

and you see so many beautiful random acts of kindness like tonight my dad went to the store to get milk for us because we didn't have any and really wanted some but he got there as they were closing (at 6 in the afternoon mind you) and a woman was leaving the store and asked what he needed and when he said milk, she said well how perfect i have 2 gallons! and gave him one.

people are beautiful. when bad stuff happens, for the most part, you pull together. it's like you have one big statewide, hurricane weary family.

oh and, we have another hurricane coming this way.

growl. prayers please

Missionarybelle, I'm glad you and your family are safe and sound.

Thank God that New Orleans was spared the brunt of the storm. Alexandria, LA wasn't as lucky. Many of the residents there ended up with 4 ft of water in their houses.
