pan!c139
Equal as human beings, yes, but men are supposed to be the head of the family, and wives subordinate to their husbands. Men are the protectors. Just because you're being protected doesn't mean you're weak. Edited August 28, 2008 by pan!c139
Totally! the reason why I am asking is I have this friend who thinks that when a man holds a door open to her it is demeaning! I think differently of course but wanted to hear other people's thoughts who seem to pretty much hold the same values as I did. Also this is a non-catholic-bible-believing friend so i am wondering if anybody knows of some Scripture passages that have to do with men respecting women. (I don't remember the verses tho)
Ephesians 5:22-35 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.
CatherineM
I was raised back when opening a door for a woman was a given. I rebelled against that. I picked two different male-dominated careers to re-enforce how independent I am. I've come full circle now. I allow my husband to protect me. He's very protective just because I'm disabled, so it is hard to know what is because of my disability, and what is because of my gender. It doesn't take anything away from me to allow him to feel "manly."
