Healthy "to-go" Breakfast Ideas

prose

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some healthy breakfast ideas that I can make ahead of time, or purchase ahead of time for the kids.

Smoothies are hard in the car, as are Popsicle-type things.

They need to be able to eat them in my car, so keep that in mind...

Okay...

Go!

Fiber One bars "oats and caramel" are extremely delicious imo.

But, like all bars, they are a total rip-off unless you go to Sam's or Costco.

Yogurt is great. And the night before, you can chop up fruit for a sort of fruit salad and, of course, keep it in the fridge to preserve the fruit until the morning: apples, grapes, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, etc. Dry cereal for the car, like cheerios.

Peanut butter between waffles like a sandwich. No jelly, that gets messy. Out of the fridge, the peanut butter is solid enough that it doesn't squeeze out. They are also really quiet while eating them.

English muffin, Canadian bacon and coagulated milk, or sausage and coagulated milk. My boys used to like to put those pre-made hashbrown squares on theirs. Sometimes I'd make a micro-waved egg to slap on it while we were getting around in the morning.

We tried granola bars, but they'd get hungry before lunch. With a heavy protein/fat, they never got hungry.

I have been sticking to basically the fruit thing, and I can't really use anything with peanut butter (in case someone in Anna's class has allergies)....

I figured there must be some sort of bars I could make or SOMETHING.

sigh.

You could use sunbutter instead of peanutbutter. It's made with sunflower seeds, rather than peanuts. A family I know with nut allergies uses that all the time.

I, myself, am a granola bar type girl. I pretty much live off of those things for the school year. :idontknow:

Those bagel to go things are pretty good lol

anything with apple butter or pumpkin butter on it.

Um those cereal bars are good. The ones with the "milk" in the middle. Milk n' Cereal bars I believe are what they are called.

I was thinking about some sort of homemade trail mix...

Or perhaps some sort of home made bars...

Dry cereal is a good idea. So long as it is healthy.

i am sure you could experiment with oats and such to make your own bars, depending on what you have on hand :)

Here's two recipes I used for the Boy Scouts for backpacking trips

Breakfast Apple Bars
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 cup cooking oil
1/4 cup applesauce
3 tablespoons honey
1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup mixed dried fruit bits
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Spray 10X6X2 inch baking dish. Mix flour, oats, baking soda, and cinnamon, set aside. In another bowl stir oil, applesauce, honey, and vanilla. Stir the applesauce mixture into the flour mixture. Spread in dish, bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes. Makes 16 bars.

My boys liked mango and pineapple sometimes and raisins and apricots other times. You can also try sunflower seeds. I even used pumpkin seeds once and replaced the applesauce with caned pumpkin, and they loved it.
