Haggling

I went to Best Buy recently. Love it. All that blue they use is soothing ..

On the con side, I tried to haggle them down on a 200+ipod and the manager wouldn't budge. I thought it was worth a try.

The tag-alongers were mortified, but I was, and remain, shameless. I figure, if its expensive to me, why not. My line is 200 dollars. Above that, and I'm going to haggle.

I know one guy who says the sticker price is the "stupid price" that only naive people will pay, and that you can haggle anything. He does haggle everything. I've heard girls say they don't think haggling is ladylike. Or they would only do it where it was expected (eg. flea market)

My parents are going to take me with them when they buy a new washing machine :))

Best Buy, Walmart, etc. that carry Ipods aren't allowed to change the price of the ipods themselves. They can offer free accessories or rebates that are sanctioned by Apple. But Apple sets the prices for the ipods not the individual carriers.

that's what the guy told me. I decided to buy it just because he spent 15 minutes talking to me, and was not a jerk about it.

My dad was like that. When he was haggling for my first car, I wanted to crawl under it. I thought they were going to come to blows. I can haggle at garage sales or flea markets, but anywhere else, forget it. The exception is when I'm in Mexico. There it is expected.

My husband also likes to haggle. It's because his illness doesn't allow him to feel normal stuff like embarrassment. He can actually hop on the bus and ask the driver for directions. What guy can do that?

I haggle a lot. I almost got a leather purse from Fossil for $40 because it was on clearance for $85, down from $165 and then I found a water stain on it, then I asked if there could be a further discount. The sales associate said yes, the store manager said no. So I walked away :D:

Having worked in retail for 2 1/2 years and having been an Ipod carrier, I can honestly say he was telling you the truth about not being able to change the price. Apple sets that bar.

Sometimes it pays to haggle. Some department stores will change the price for you, and not many people know they can actually lower the price of what they want to purchase. The department stores don't really advertise this, but it's worth a shot wherever you go!

Catherine,

My dad is very good at buying cars. He goes to the dealers and tells them his price, when they want to raise the price, he just gets up to leave. Many have called my dad back. More often than not, my dad gets the car with the price he wants.

I think it depends on the type of retailer. I used to work at an electronics store, and the manager wouldn't drop the price unless it was an 'Open Box' item.

Yeah, I've worked in retail too. For the most part, retailers will not haggle because they aren't the ones who set prices. There are exceptions, but usually, they can't give you a lower price, even if they wanted to. It's all set by the powers that be.

We were required though to give you the advertised price. Meaning if we accidentally put the wrong tag up or left a sales tag up from a previous sale we had to honor it.

I love to haggle but i find so few people wiling to debate the vaue of the items they are wishing to sell, most of the time the other person gave me the impression of someone with no backbone and was scared to try.

People try to haggle at CVS, but we just raise the price instead

Not kidding actually, 6000 price increases this month to keep up with "increased shipping and economical factors"

As a manager, I can give some discounts on some of the seasonal markdown stuff, once it goes to 50% off if someone asks hard enough I'll give it to em for 75%.. likewise at 75% to 90%, just trying to move the product and get it out of my hair :P
