I could just see the conversation...

Bus driver: Your parents actually named you Female?

Kid *with stuck up, snobbish expression on face*: It's Fee-MAH-lay.

The big question is... was it a boy or a girl? :hehehe:

A girl. The unfortunate story was that the mother couldn't speak English, so the nurses filled out the birth certificate....they put female down, and the mother thought the nurses named her.

Sadly, I'm not joking.
Why doesn't anyone seem to name their children with Christian names anymore. I'm sick and tired of celebrities and others coming up with all these combination names and madeup ones!!!! In the Western tradition, they should be named after saints, biblical characters, and/ or their derivatives!!!!

AHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just get frustrated with society today!!!

while in a way, i agree with you that names are getting silly, why do we have to hold up everyone to a Christian standard in naming their children? that's ridiculous. isn't America great where we can name our children what we want to, instead of holding to a standard that people don't believe in?

In combination with that surname it's ridiculous... but Mercedes used to be a completely normal and proper girl's name! Until one daddy decided to name his business after his little girl... if I were her I wouldn't stand for it <_<

Uh... have you ever heard of Rumer Godden? :smokey: Different spelling, yes, but still a great name.

Oh that isn't her surname, that's her second name. I had students named Mercedes, and that was fine, it was just the combination with "LaBenz" that made it ridiculous.

There sure are a lote of saints and popes that don't have names derived from the Holy Bible.

Just sayin....
As a teacher I come across a lot of interesting names since I meet about 400 new kids each year.

The most interesting one from last year was a girl named Happy. Come on.....
Poor kid...that sounds like the name of a puppy.

I think sometimes people forget that these are CHILDREN they are naming, not pets! I don't mind if people don't name their kids after Saints, but give the child a name with some sort of meaning! Name the child after someone, or after a virtue or something! And think about the poor kid on the playground! And PLEASE, if you insist on making up your own name, for your child's sake, don't fill it with a bunch of silent letters!
Also, my fiance's mom once taught 2 twins named oranjello and lemonjello. Yup- named after jello.
My aunt is a principal and had twins in her school named the same thing. I hope to God we are talking about the same twins and there aren't multiple kids with the same crazy names!

I am dreading the first day of school in a way because I hate trying to take attendance the first day and guessing how to pronouce all the different names. Since I am a music teacher and only see each class once a week, this can be a daunting process! 400 or so names!
