I could have sworn I've read an article/ watched a show that explained how Amityville was nearly all fiction...again, no sources to back up my memory
I'd have to see a source. I have read some stuff...
Well I'll start off by saying that you can't make a good horro movie based on a true story without stretching the truth. Some do it more than others.
What I heard though, with references (although in all fairness I can't give you any either. ;) ) is that a lot of what was in the movies and book (there was a book, right?) was generally held to be fairly accurate.
Now that I think harder though... hm... Did the man who had lived in the house write a book?
I should stop talking. I don't actually know what I'm talking about. :))

ok new here..i found this forum when i googled catholic perspective on ghosts. my husband and i were trying to think of a trip for our anniverssay in oct and thought going to a haunted inn might be fun. there seem to be a lot of hauntings, ghosts, or whatever from the civil war times. i like the idea that ghosts aren't scarey, they're more or less in purgatory trying to figure out the way to Christ. I also like the idea that maybe they should be left alone instead of disturbed and exploited. it still sounds eerie and admitedly alittle fun to try to catch a glimpse of something or someone from another time. there are places like this all over the states, but most seem to be in the east. lots of history, lots of ghosts wandering around?

I have met ghosts of the 4th kind and did NOT like the encounter. We had a Franciscan priest in to deal with it. Unfortunately the nice one left as well.

Thank you Father, that is an amazing resource site!!!!

On a related note, I watched the Sixth Sense just an hour or so ago. Loved it way more the second time. I don't want to go to bed yet though, just in case I'm more creeped out than I thought.
My eyes hurt though...

Well, from the wiki:
The claims of physical damage to the locks, doors and windows were rejected by Jim and Barbara Cromarty, who bought the house for $55,000 in March 1977. In a television interview filmed at the house for That's Incredible!, Barbara Cromarty argued that they appeared to be the original items and had not been repaired. The That's Incredible! feature also showed that the "Red Room" was a small closet in the basement, and was known to the previous owners of the house since it was not concealed in any way. The claim made in Chapter 11 of the book that the house was built on a site where the local Shinnecock Indians had once abandoned the mentally ill and the dying was rejected by local Native American leaders. [7] The claim of cloven hoofprints in the snow on January 1, 1976 was rejected by other researchers, since a check on the weather records showed that there had been no snow in Amityville on the day in question. Neighbors reported nothing unusual during the time that the Lutzes were living there. Police officers are shown visiting the house in the book and 1979 film, but records showed that the Lutzes did not call the police during the period that they were living on Ocean Avenue. [8] There was no bar in Amityville called The Witches' Brew at the time, and Ronald DeFeo, Jr. was a regular at Henry's Bar, a short distance from 112 Ocean Avenue.
Correct me if I'm wrong... (because I saw that movie almost a year ago now, and wasn't paying as close attention as I normally would) but aren't most of those either relatively minor or mostly impossible to prove either way in any case?

To be honest, I have no clue. I haven't seen the movie or read the book...I just vaguely remember stumbling upon some articles about the whole thing a few years ago.
