kujo
I agree with Madame V, in that it is the PC liberals who are the ones who are fighting this kind of thing. I believe most Mexican immigrants are very eager to assimilate to the American culture. They can't help it if some official tells them that they don't need to speak the language to become American Citizens. I think liberals are the ones who try to keep English from becoming the official language of the states, not immigrants. My public library has programs teaching English as a Second Language. I was present in the library one night, while this program was going on. I was shocked to hear the instructor telling the immigrants that "Republicans are not interested in the poor." IF this is the kind of propaganda that is fed to immigrants, I don't see how they are supposed to know the truth otherwise. I'm all for making English the official language. I don't think anyone should be denied a job just because they aren't bilingual! (As it is in some cases...)
So, anyone who feels compassion towards a latin woman in the emergency room whose son cut his hand and needs stitches, but can't communicate because she doesn't speak English, is a "PC liberal?"
So, we need to provide services in the 6,912 living languages known today??? Imagine how many states and local governments would be bankrupted due to this.
No, but having them in the 2 or 3 major languages in our country seems a lot more reasonable. dominicansoul
nope. I define PC liberals as those who pander to minorities just to get their votes and once in office they do absolutely nothing for them at.all. and for those not in the political sphere, I just feel PC liberals are those who push their agendas on unsuspecting groups of people, just to satisfy their need for control over these peoples. I don't disagree with you, Kujo, that is a very sad situation when people of other languages cannot speak English in emergency circumstances. And I for one, understand that not every person can learn English...I have heard it can be a very difficult language to learn. But I believe what most of us are speaking of on this thread, is a real need to push English as the official language and to make those in our country who do not speak it, learn it to better these types of situations...I think the way things are now, many are choosing NOT to learn it, because they feel they don't really need to, and some don't even try... Madame Vengier
So, we are telling the people that speak the other languages that they are out of luck? That they aren't a part of the lucky group of immigrants?
That's exactly what we are expected to tell them. This nonsense of having "two or three major languages" represented is unjust and unfair. Especially when you consider that Hispanics are a "major" group because over 15 million of them are here illegally in the first place. Why should we pander to people who don't even have a legal right to be here? Learn the language, follow our laws, try to assimilate within reason into our society--or get out. It's simple. And it goes for everyone.
