Iacobus
I was a boy scout for many years and quit because it was no longer based on what it said. All it was was an excuse for teenage boys to run in the woods making noise and knocking over trees. When I got to High School I joined the Outdoor Club. We hold a VERY negtive view of Boy Scouts and Church groups (sorry, they are a little too loud and hyper in caves). What I would do if your children want to be in GS or something like that, find out what they really want and find the best group for them. And whoever made up the idea to attach with Planned Parenthood, must to insane.

littleflower+JMJ
Ok folks, it's not necessarily "only" in the Waco area. The Girl Scout organization as we know it nationwide, receives money from the United Way - albeit a smaller and smaller amount every year - and the United Way is NOT a pro-life orgainzation. (Despite the propaganda they put out there and the fact that "Catholic Charities" is one of the places you can designate your contributions to. Don't be fooled - give it to your parish instead.) Having been a Girl Scout leader for several years I can tell you there are a number of things not right with the organization. In many, many Girl Scout councils across the US there is a working relationship with Planned Parenthood - it is usually up to the individual troops to partake in the requesting of materials from this vile group. Rather than boycott cookies (which because of the relationship with the United Way, is usually the single biggest way the girls can earn any extra money for their troop), if you are concerned about the Planned Parenthood connection (and you should be), talk to the leader of the troop. Especially if your daughter is involved in scouting. There is a point in Girl Scouts when it is deemed "appropriate" to discuss sexuality as part of troop time (usually when the girls are in their early teens). This is a chosen program, and one that we did not chose to participate in our troop because we felt it was a parental issue. But some troops don't bother discussing it with the parents. Be informed. Get involved. That is the best advice I can give. The Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization for girls to be involved in. As with everything these days though, one must be vigilant.
yes your are right about United Way. great advice kilroy. the safest thing i think is to give to your parish. you really dont want your money to be given to the wrong peeps to do wrong with. :shame: nor children prey to someone's crazy agenda as to planned parenthood. -_-
cmotherofpirl
Both my boys went thru from cubbies to Life Scouts, and my daughter is in Venture Crew Boy Scouts. My sons had to quit when they got jobs. They did run thru the woods, but I doubt if they ran down many trees. THey do at least 50 hours a year in work projects from taking the blind bowling to volunterring at the local food bank. Each area is different. If you get a good board and leaders you have a good system. They have much more independance from the councils than the Girl Scouts did.
