I'm glad it's not nationwide!! I like the Girl Scouts and always buy their cookies. I was a Brownie and Scout when I was little.

the fact of the matter is that the mothers have done right by forming their own troops with a christian based value, however, sexuality, sex, condoms, and all of that related material is still being tought to grade schoolers in elementary and junior high (that is where i learned it)

i must say i do not like Pro-Life, however, they may not be showing some new things to children, since the schools are teaching sex ed. i was disrguntled when i read that it had graphic pictures... =(

I think if they sold GS cookies year round they would put everyone else out of business, even if their cookies are $4 a box!!!

Ok folks, it's not necessarily "only" in the Waco area.

The Girl Scout organization as we know it nationwide, receives money from the United Way - albeit a smaller and smaller amount every year - and the United Way is NOT a pro-life orgainzation. (Despite the propaganda they put out there and the fact that "Catholic Charities" is one of the places you can designate your contributions to. Don't be fooled - give it to your parish instead.)

Having been a Girl Scout leader for several years I can tell you there are a number of things not right with the organization. In many, many Girl Scout councils across the US there is a working relationship with Planned Parenthood - it is usually up to the individual troops to partake in the requesting of materials from this vile group.

Rather than boycott cookies (which because of the relationship with the United Way, is usually the single biggest way the girls can earn any extra money for their troop), if you are concerned about the Planned Parenthood connection (and you should be), talk to the leader of the troop. Especially if your daughter is involved in scouting. There is a point in Girl Scouts when it is deemed "appropriate" to discuss sexuality as part of troop time (usually when the girls are in their early teens). This is a chosen program, and one that we did not chose to participate in our troop because we felt it was a parental issue. But some troops don't bother discussing it with the parents.

Be informed. Get involved. That is the best advice I can give.

The Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization for girls to be involved in. As with everything these days though, one must be vigilant.

this is absolutly unaceptable.

the notion that this is the "responsible" thing to do is so far from the truth. [/quote]
I agree

Thanks for the sanity and common sense in your post. It was really getting to the point where such virtues were needed in this thread.....

Wow, whoever makes the decision within girl scouts to make these ties with Planned Parenthood… is really screwed up.

This may easily make the whole organization look bad; but it may become a saving grace – parents will start asking questions.

Alright, I admit having mixed feelings about this. I won't let my dd join GS after I read an article titled "Everything I learned about being a lesbian I learned in the Girl Scouts" ... that is not to say that GS advocates lesbianism! I know lots of churches sponsor GS troups... and I buy cookies every year (15 boxes this year!). But I still won't let my daughter join. I am considering 4H next year (if we have the time) because my son can be in it too. (kill two birds with one stone!)

I think my daughter just likes the idea of the uniform. She's just like I was!

I was in Scouting for 20 years, and scouting now is not the scouting you grew up with.

Check it out carefully.
