Madame Vengier
The Pledge and invocation are usually done before the meeting but Obama "doesn't know what happened". Mmm-hmm, right. Maybe because things like this just don't enter his mind. Until he's reminded. I love how he tells the guy "Do you want to start the Pledge? Go ahead and start the Pledge." Pssst, Obama...you're the one running for Prez and it's YOUR town hall meeting. Maybe YOU should be leading the Pledge? Just a thought. dominicansoul
Is the Pledge of Allegiance elimated from classrooms now? When I was in elementary school, we used to say the Pledge every morning before class began. IS this something that is no longer done? What's scary is maybe Obama is reflecting the attitudes of the younger generations who might not give a hoot about patriotism and all that. Only when a disaster strikes our country, than everybody becomes a patriot.

And when I was little I used to get so embarassed b/c at the end I would say "Amen" by accident b/c it felt like we were saying a prayer. I did that a couple times, turned red, got weird looks and that was enough to cure me. But yeah, in the video you can see how Obama just waves the whole thing off and he's all like, "you can lead it if you want to". No reverence at all. Just all nonchalant and couldn't-care-less about it.
CatherineM
The problem is that if we start believing it is okay to not care, that the younger generation doesn't need to bother, then maybe we won't have lines at the enlistment stations the next time we have a Pearl Harbor or 9-11. kujo
Does anyone know if this was a genuine mistake? I mean, if the events usually include an "invocation" (whatever that is) and the Pledge, couldn't this just be a mistake? I don't know. I've never been to nor do I plan on going to an Obama rally. When I went to hear his wife speak when she was in town, she began with the pledge.
dominicansoul
To be honest, I don't follow what Obama is up to. All the current events I receive come from this forum. I guess I just don't like watching the news during election years as much.... Has Obama ever explained why he's not favorable towards these practices? When the whole thing blew up about Rev. Wright, I kinda sympathized with the man. If I am getting the story straight....we saw bits and pieces of soundbites of a very angry black preacher calling God's wrath on America. This is the stuff Obama subscribed to for the last 20 years, correct? From what I see, it's just a bunch of people who are still angry for this nation's past crimes against black people. And sure, they may seem a bit extreme, but people tend to exaggerate when they are emotionally charged. Especially when they are angry. And yes, things have gotten so much better, but of course we all know racism exists. IF this is what is keeping Obama from doing these patriotic actions...I wouldn't care too much. But the fact is, we don't really know what it is that makes him aloof to these symbols of patriotism. And I believe, that's what concerns people. If he would only explain himself, then, maybe, people would leave it alone. A lot of people aren't happy with our country for various reasons. Does that make them any less patriotic? But we want to make sure that when things get tough, our president will stand by our country through thick and thin...

He gave the lame excuse that his "grandfather taught him" that patriotism is in the heart, so Obama doesn't think things like lapel flag pins, and the Pledge are all that necessary. He's scary. That was sooooooo embarrasing. This was somewhere between 3rd and 5th grade, can't remember exactly. Probably more like 3rd grade. I raised my hand to call out to my teacher to ask a question in the usual way but instead of calling out "Mrs. So and So", I called out "Mommy". Good grief. When I was teaching first grade, I got "Mommied" a lot. I think my dh may have done that when he was a kid, too. eta: even older students do it. Deb
Obama's reaction doesn't really bother me at all. Maybe the pledge and an invocation is done before he usually comes out, so I won't pass judgement on him. What is worse than any of it, was what happened after the press conference.
