Fun With Jehovah's Witnesses
I have done door-to-door Catholic missionary work...interesting experience. (Through the Regnum Christi movement during Holy Week) People are often surprised, "There are Catholic missionaries going around now too!"
There were times the Mormons were going down a street we had just finished...(probably vice versa too)...haha
I've done that before on the Baptist side of things. Not the best of neighborhoods, but oh well. I ran into a ton of people who said they'd been there, but were stared at because of their kids.

Mom did too, back when she was in high school. Although unlike mom, I never had anyone open their doors with a shotgun drawn.

Farsight one

There's a kingdom hall very near my apartment, but they've never come by. I think it's because of my "witness security system", which consists of a bumper sticker on my front door(there when I moved in) that says "escapist skateboarding" on it and a broken door bell. Works wonders. I think I'm prepared enough if they ever decide to knock though anyways.

Nihil Obstat

So what are common things that Jehovah's Witnesses will say against Catholicism, and what does one say in response?
I've never personally talked to any Jehovah's Witnesses, but obviously I want to be prepared when I get my chance. ;)

I just have fun with them.....

The last ones that came to Prague I wished good luck and told them to go and convert the Athiests..... I said when they start reading Church Fathers and have questions send them to me ;) I will take care of them.

Another couple told me that they were Catholic and that Catholics did not read the Bible.
They got REALLY mad at me because I looked them right in the eyes and said "That is a Bald-Faced LIE!" I told them that the Catholic Mass included readings from both new and old testament and covered the WHOLE gospel every three years.

The Woman told me that "My priest never did that."

I told her "Stop lying. Don't blame your lack of faith and involvement on the Catholic Church but upon yourself and stop spreading lies about the Church. YOu should have found out what you beleived in BEFORE you left and started preaching against the Church as a Jehovah's witness."

When they tried to pull out the Bible on me I told them hold on, let me get mine and we will look off of that..... They were shocked and did not know what to do.

They said they had to leave.

I did not say any of this meanly, but I could tell that no one had talked to them like this before except the Jehovah's witnesses. Maybe it got them thinking.

Good stuff. Its really frustrating when these JW's blame their lack of knowledge about the faith on everybody but themselves. Like the priest was supposed to check up on them every half hour to see if they were reading their bible. Give me a break.

I HATE it when Protestants make assumptions and judgements on me and Catholicism based on things that are made up, exaggerated, or misinterpreted.
Although I suppose I shouldn't say "Protestants", because that would be an unfair generalization. Atheists also do it. ;)
Mostly joking of course, lots of people do it, and I guess I can't blame one particular group.

...but I still HATE it!

You could always invite them to the parish blood drive...

One time they decided to leave after I turned the discussion to the Trinity.

Thy Geekdom Come
Last summer my best friend, a seminarian friend, and myself went to the Jehovah's Witnesses booth at the Fair. We had a nice discussion, actually. By the end, however, they did ask us to leave, when they could not counter our Scripture verses that Jesus was God.

Ahh, those were the good 'ole days. We were quite the three-person team. We'd hit up all the religious booths, from the evangelicals to the fundamentalists to the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Hmm. I think the fair's coming up again next week. We might have to make another trip out there.
Some friends and I went to Pittsburgh on the 4th of July once and met some folks handing out free bottles of water with Chick Tracts. The guy first complimented me on my crucifix, but by the end of our discussion, he goes, "you do know that Jesus rose from the dead, right?"

Anyway, we were all FUS students, so a few of us hung around and chatted with him all day...kept him from being able to get into a serious discussion with anyone else, lol. That was the whole plan. :D

Jennie and I don't get cable, so we sometimes flip through the channels and come upon the Seventh Day Adventist channel here. Aside from their very appetizing vegan cooking shows (gag me), they had one preacher on talking about how the starburst (the pattern, not the candy) was used in ancient sun-god worship and there's a starburst pattern at the Vatican, so that proves that the Catholic Church is the whore of Babylon and all that.

Then just last week they had this woman on talking about how she used to be Catholic and Catholics don't promote reading the Bible and this-and-that other anti-Catholic bologna...and not five minutes later, she goes, "but my parents never went to Mass except for special occasions." I was so ticked...I mean, how DARE she go off on the Catholic Church pretending she has even the slightest idea what we teach when she wasn't even properly catechized or taken to Mass regularly?!

That's the first question we have to ask ourselves when former Catholics attack...did they ever actually know their faith...were they ever actually Catholic?

I spoke occasionally, but no, actually, we had a very knowledgeable master's student with us who whipped out some Greek, hehe.

I like the pictures they have of the picnics with animals. You can pet the tiger and lion.

Anywho....yea I hate it when they come at 8am Saturday.

I like that tomb/womb illustration.

And it would be kinda fun to let them and Mormons battle for your soul over tea and crumpets.

And imo people should avoid calling them "cult" just because they will think you are comparing them to Waco and Jim Jones and Heaven's Gate and stuff.

I'm tired. :coffee:
